Teddy W. passed away a number of years ago, after an extended stay in the Veterans Administration Hospital here on Long Island, NY.

As John expressed, he was a real nice guy. One on the many that has been my pleasure to know over the years, in both stock car and open cockpit racing.

September 1977 at the ROC at Pocono, the first year they ran it on the 2 1/2 mile track. I was shooting the race for Gater News.

He had a big hit in the tunnel turn. I remember Big Bob O'Rourke telling the drivers even before practice to make sure NOT to drive the place like it was a Saturday night track as they would find themselves in the (what was then) steel wall. I never did like Modifieds on a track that big.

You're right JBull, he never was the same. A damn shame

    Some neat shots Dr. John!

  4. That is how I remember it also. I was there with my wife and I believe the BullFather was in our arms there. When we saw him enter the tunnel turn and then hit the wall we knew it was a bad hit. We could feel it in the pit of our stomach.

I'm not sure where in the magazine that the above picture was placed, but I do remember the picture. The caption underneath when it appeared made me laugh. It explained a little about the car, and then asked - "how many of you noticed the naked girl in the picture?" For the record, I didn't see her until I reaed the caption.

    BELIEVE IT OR NOT!!!!

Can't say if this was part of it or not (wasn't there & never saw it), but there were scenes of a porno movie (involving several modifieds) shot at the Islip (NY) Speedway.

From memory, the above car fits into the correct time frame.

They had first approached us at Riverhead, but we said NO WAY!!!

The picture of Bugsy standing next to the coupe was taken at Stafford. In the picture of merv Treichler and Ray Hendrick the fellow to Merv's right is Clayton Mitchell, the chassis man side of Tant- Mitchell.

This fits perfectly with my fourth stated purpose for the existence of racing cars:

Modifieds apparently do this more efficiently than any other type of racing car.

Being a modified racer, this makes me very happy indeed. :D

For those of us living far from the great state of NY... the Versus Channel will be broadcasting a series of NASCAR Modified races this season, starting with a 200 lap race from Riverhead last Saturday.

    From their website:
"The inaugural appearance of NASCAR racing on VERSUS is set for Wednesday, Aug. 4 @ 7PM ET, with the Riverhead 200 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event from Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway."

full schedule of events is on their website at: http://www.versus.com/blogs/nascar-whelen-modified-tour/nascar-whelen-modified-tour-schedule/

I don't know if the surround-sound will go loud enough to make it an authentic experience for the kids, but I'm gonna try! Please, no spoilers from those of you lucky enough to have been there in person.

I do remember them filming a movie at Isilp. As I recall it was a special event like a Permatex race or something like that, late in the season. I didn't know it was a porno but could have been.

If I remember correctly, the one I'm talking about was done during the week .. when the track was quiet & there was almost no one around. Only certain scenes from that skin flick were filmed there.

Probably different movie. This was some kind of special event a lot of out of town guys. I remember Duffy's coupe being there that day. Boy getting old is not for sissies. I have to keep looking in my wallet to remember who I am.

I remember one back in the eighties, Fast Cars and Fast Women. While they were doing their thing, we were trying to figure out who owned the racecars and forgot about them LOL.

For all you guys that appreciate the Northeast Modifieds, you should consider joining us at the 2011 Modified Reunion, held during Florida Speedweeks in February (same day as the Richie Evans Memorial at New Smyrna Speedway). Details will be coming later in the year, but as a sample of who you might see there, here is just a small sample of drivers/owners that have made it in the first 3 years:

    Bugs Stevens
    Bill Wimble
    Ron Bouchard
    Will Cagle
    Dutch Hoag
    Gene Bergin
    Chuck Boos
    Ed Ortiz
    Doug Heveron
    George Summers
    Satch Worley
    Jimmy Winks
    Bob Garbarino (Mystic Missle #4)
Bob Judkins (2x Pinto, father of the Pinto Revolution... there have been 2 re-creations of the 2x entered in the Vintage Modified portion of the show)
    Billy Harman
    Bill Spade
    Gene Bergin
    Jim McGraw
    Don Turner (Turner Bros. #18)
    Stan Freisen
    Jerry Dostie
    Andy Romano
    Ron Narducci....

And over 100 other racers from the past have been there... sharing stories & telling lies...! Plus, there have been over 30 different Vintage Mods that have displayed & turned some laps on the high banks at New Smyrna.

If anyone would like to get on the e-mail list for the updates as things get closer, please drop me a line, and I will get the info to you.

Keep in mind.... this event is 100% FREE, plus the Speedway will allow 2 Grandstand passes for all former Drivers/Owners/Officials that participate, into that nights Richie Evans Memorial race, plus 4 other classes.

    Please respond to:

Hope to see another great turnout of Legands & Fans in February of 2011...!!!!

Marty Van Drutens Pinto, also an original, was built by Maynard Troyer, and driven by Gil Hearne

Marty's other car, which he says will be in Florida in February, is another Troyer built, Hearne driven creation. This one was owned by Jim Soucy, who also attends the Reunion
