Just finished a 2nd one for my 53. First one lasted many, many years. When it lost a head gasket, I built another to go back in. Next one is going to mctim64, for his magic.....
There are various standard ford-o-matics, FMX upgrades, then there is C4 adaptations, powerglide adaptations, www.ford-y-block.com has some examples.
I bought a C-4 bell kit from Mummert for my FED, very nice kit very complete. I think if I was to build a street car with an auto I would go for an AOD, I have a T-5 in my pickup right now and it works very well. Comfortable cruis at 75 mph and 2400rpm.
When you do build it do yourself a favor and get a latter dizzy and carb. The "Teapot" and "Load-O-Matic" that you have will work well when tuned right but you will prolly have a big headache before that happens. You will probably find that you have a 239, that's what should be in there (1954), but it could be a 272 or 292. 312 is unlikely, there are claimed to be more 312s out there than were ever built. lol
Here's my 272, basically stock as a rock. It is possible to blow a Y-block up. Early '60's Atco Dragway in NJ had a '57 Custom 300, 312, + .060, Crane etc .. about 7 grand (one of many times) sent a rod out the side of the block taking about 3" of that Crane with it ..
312 in the duece, with alot of hard miles, got a 292 in a galaxie, and about 6 or 8 in the shop with tons of misc.speed parts.
So, what's your opinion. I have a 302 and C4 which I can use in my 26 RPU. Or I can get my hands on a 292 Y block, as I have a friend with several totally complete 292s. I can have one for $500. Pros and cons of sticking with the 302 ? Pros and cons for going with the 292 ?
I have a 368 in my '57 lincoln and a drove of 292's in my stockpile for future hot rod projects. I just scored a Dearborn Interceptor, COMPLETE!! Anyone know what that is? It is going in my next project. I just started polishing the intake setup. Doing the whole thing polished but will chrome the carters. Here is one of the air cleaners polished next to the other one.
8,000 rpm???????????????????????? maybe a trifle exaggeration there huh? We ran extremely modified y-blocks in the 60's and I mean extremely modified. 6,800 to 7,000 is all ya can get.
Yeah, 7000 is about all I can get out of them but that's screamin'. You can hear this one hit 7000 for the shifts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1Dtey2hnd0
Thanks. I have some speed stuff tucked away from my gramps. The truck is a 54 but the eng is from who knows what... All the numbers I am running keep pointing to a 292/312. I was thinking 292 after reading up on how few 312's were produced. Once i pull it I will know more. Thanks again!
The y-Block is the most under rated motor ever. do your self a favor & subscribe to the Y- Block mag. Bruce Young is the Guru. If you can attend the y- block nats. in Columbus ohio you will be very impressed.
57 F100 292. Everybody said to rip it apart and rebuild it. I took the valve covers and valley pan off got rid of all the mouse nests, nuts, and screwdriver out of the valley pan. added a few new push rods and fuel. Runs like a raped ape! No problem burning off the vintage whites! Turns out it's casting # C2AE. 62-64 hd block w/steel crank. Does this mean anything to you guys???
I've posted it before but I've twice taken my stocker on 1000+ miles road trips. DRIVE'EM! Later,Bill Are these the correct colors for this motor? green and yellow? The heads and block are green. The front motor mount is yellow. They've been on there a long time.
I have seen a couple 57 truck motors painted yellow but know nothing about the green valve covers,I think the 55 merc motors were painted yellow also but cant remember what color the valve covers were on them.
My 292 looks like some parts were orange and some parts are yellow, and some look like they have been both colors.....
Has anyone actually run a dearborn interceptor manifold on the street? How are they for reliability? I would like to hook up my water cooled exhaust manifolds, can it be done without overheating on a closed cooling system?
I have had lots of y block 272 292 and one 292 t-bird with 312 heads. Right now I have a 55 ford car and have 3 speed. Love the y block for the look and dist. in back but fe is the way to go if ford had put out the fe in 54 or 55 the Chevy's would be nothing. Headers help the y block but to much money needed in head work to make real horsepower. sorry a true ford man. But fe the way to go.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> <o> </o>
I juist took a sick 272 out of my '54 F-100 and am in the process of putting a "hear it run" 292 I found on Craigslist back in it's place. I also have a complete 272 in the barn.
