    I hope it's not,,,,
    But,,
It sounds like the same deal that the guys get when they work for a major TV Show like PowerBlock, HotRod, Trucks, etc.
The Lead Guys can build all their hearts desire but the Company owns the rights to what's produced or they absorb the profits from the labor.
Like you said it may be temporary but sounds like an opportunity and a great spring board into having your own place.
Speaking of that,, PowerBlock advertises for Guys "out in the real world" to step up and show their talent and possibly fit into a show in some capacity.
I'd say a big GOOD LUCK!
One guy that made it,, had in his contract to shave his head,, heck, they may ask something like that from you,, like develop a lisp,,lol.

Are you kidding? Any idea of the overhead in a capital intensive business?

This is opportunity finding you, instead of the other way around.

Ride the wave while you got it.

I am sure you already know where to get quality

equipment, but if you are looking for planishing hammers, pullmax, Erco, or any other

equipment like that, I would be happy to refer you to some good people.

    Good luck!

  9. That's awesome.

Tell the bosses or the investors that what the really need is a company truck - for promotional uses. Gives you something to build and gives them a promotional vehicle that can be used to showcase what their new division is capable of.

That would be great way for them to advertise. Tell them to think of the exposure the shop would get as you document the build on the HAMB and lots of other forums that you'll be visiting.

Doesn't have to be an over-the-top high dollar project. Just something cool with some of your innovations incorporated into it. What innovations? Who cares...you'll think of some cool things to put in there. If you can find some of the company's existing products to include, even better.

Tell them it would be their own "american chopper" for way less money.

Go for it. Successful business people need to know how to sell their ideas to their customers and the money people.

This seems like a good time to post some pix of the cars and the work you've done and see if you can get the ball rolling. Congratulations man.

Get some business cards made up with YOUR name and email on things. Give them to all customers. That way if this turns into a temp gig you may still have part of a customer base.

(see vistaprint.com for cheapie business cards, at least pay enough not to get their advertising on the back)

A lot of hard work, a little luck, right place at the right time and you are living the dream!

    Congratulations man!

I hope your shop becomes one of the names everyone has heard of.

Now go hit all the regional car shows and car clubs and let them know that you are out there and ready to create some awesome cars.

good for you man. thats awesome. the little guy gets a break for once and gets sponsored to do what he loves. if i was on the same patch of dirt as you i'd bring my 59 chev mordoor over as it needs a chop but alas, geography is against me.

  22. You know how they always were doing some 'theme bike' or other? Well, that's 'cause they had a customer who wanted a build done; if you can get some other businesses to have you do some promo pieces for 'em (don't even have to be runners; can be for display in a showroom floor), that might be another stream of customers other than hot rodders.

BTW, those gold-chainer guys... get real good at shmoozing them. We need all their old parts they discard when installing tweed interiors, electronic gages, and TPI engines.

That might prove to be pretty difficult, you would need a really long leg that bends in about four places.

That sounds like a nice deal, an opportunity to do work you love and still get paid. It could lead to some advancement in the company. Be prepared for your union "brothers" to then hate you if that happens, as union people are by nature, socialists. They are programmed that every one should get the same thing, same wage structure, same benefits, same representation, etc, etc.
I've read all these posts, and two or three have it thought out. Most everyone else works as an employee for someone else and probably always will. Nothing bad about that, but it shows in the thought process.
First, it is not the "Union" out trying to find ways to create jobs, it's the company owner, the guys who take all the risk, who pay all the bills. You know, the greedy fat cats the union reps always talk about. All unions do is pre negotiate your wage and benefit package and job description. Employers create jobs based upon market demands, and they see an opportunity in this, and it is a high compliment to you that they do. Earn that trust for them now.
Your employers must see a good return on this project or it will go away, plain and simple. Don't resist them if they are giving you correction on cost structure, pricing, etc. Most people have no clue what and how margin is detirmined, or that it is diefferent than markup and profit. That's why they will never own a successful buisness of their own.
People will pay $65.00/hour for good work done efficiently. In fact $65.00/hour for skilled labor is cheap. I know because that's what I charge, and the people I compete against often charge as much as twice that. Even the performance car and motorcycle parts we build, we charge that same rate. Yes, some squirm a bit, but then we simply point out the difference in quality and they most often buy from us.
It will be a great oppportunity for you to move ahead in life. As I said; you may advance in the company, or you may choose to learn how the financials are calculated after a time, and decide it is time to strike out on your own, or with a new company with you and your current employers are actual business partners. None of that would come for at least 2-3 years though.
The most important thing is to appreciate the opportunity and to show your bosses that their trust in you was well founded. Good luck!

I wil still get my regular union wage and package etc. The bay thaey gave me is a little dirty and cramped, but I will make it much more presentable. (on my own time of course) Local body shops around here charge between $45-100 per hr, so I feel that the $55-60 is not out of line, and again work that I am really familair with I can bid, and shave off a little cost, and still but money in the company pockets. Again it all stems down to getting that first project. Here are some pics of my 56 F-100 panel, it wonr top 15 at the F-100 Nats in Knoxville, and was featured in CCT magazine, I had a 32 Ford sedan that was an old shcool build that was in R&C back in 2003, I had a badass little 37 willys sedan that I just sold last year. And my 40 coupe that is pictured here. Right now I'm building a 1946 Ford coupe short door for myself. As for a shop truck, I really don't want the company to have to put up any extar funding just yet, this really needs to take off first, before I ask for much. Again just don't want it to blow up in my face. Business cards and flyers are my plan for now, and I will do that on my own, mainly to show the owners I am serious about this.

Ed,it must be nice to work for a company and the people that run it that recognize talent when they see it and grasp how it could benefit you and themas opposed to the people I work for who constantly feel they have to keep the screws on everyone to keep them down. The beatings will continue until morale improves!!!
