That Kurtis is way cool. Kinda wish Muntz didn't add the back seat as the lines work better on a 2 door. I went to Newport this year (been a few times) and they had a period V16 Cadillac Hot rod that was over the top.

Hey guys, Looks like they want the Crawford/Stroner '32 after all. Hope to see y'all there. I'll be the guy with the other funny kind of accent. Regards-Mike

4. Awesome....I got my credentials approved this past week, so I will see you there.

Have a safe trip Mike

5. HAMB GET-TO-GETHER?
I'll volunteer Frank Morawski's Carillo '27 Bonneville Modified Roadster which will be on display in Class U. Since we've never been there, how about one of you knowledgeable guys suggesting a proper time for the event.

We will be showing the Crawford/Stroner '32. It's only our second time showing there but I would sugest a fairly early time to meet up since it can get crowded once they open to the public and it can get real hot later on. I know they like to judge early but it is pretty layed back, plus I don't think anybody would be upset if you left a HAMB conversation to answer the judges questions! At least I wouldn't hold it against anybody.
See you all there. Looking forward to it. It's a fun event and a beautiful place to have it.-Mike

7. Great New Mike! Hope to meet you there. I am excited for Ken and I am really Happy I get to meet him now.

I get a ton of inspiration from these originals and can spend hours just drooling over the craftsmanship and ingenuity. I just visited the Mullin Automotive museum on Saturday and it blew me away. I also love the historic races for the same reasons.

I go for the cars not the people....

I have attended the local concours (Meadow Brook) annually. It is a great time and most owners I have spoken with are Very friendly. Just car guys in sport coats.

This year I volunteered to work. The coordinators I have spoken with said it is relaxing work and we will get to review the cars without the crowds. They each warned of one person, at two separate times, that can be a PITA. So, I will just keep my head down and take pics.

11. two things I enjoy at Forrest Grove are the custom cars (like Barris and Boyd) that were buiilt by Coach Builders (customizers) or talking to Owners about selling their cars so I could chop them add a Hemi. amazed how few of them have ever thought along those lines......Jim

12. I was surprised the 1st time I went to Pebble Beach at just how much the majority of car owners are "real car guys' and not just rich guys with investments.

Pebble beach is the pinnacle of Concours events, there are a lot of people there just to 'be seen' but the majority of people are there for the cars.

We found out very quickly that as long as you ask sensible questions rather than 'how fast, how much?' etc, you will get a good answer and really enjoy the show.

Food & drinks at PB are REALLY EXPENSIVE....REALLY, REALLY expensive...just a heads up.

Jimmy,
Ken is making arrangements to come. It will be great to meet him in person for me too. Looking forward to meeting everybody. As for hot, trust me. It can get hot. It is called Pebble BEACH. Who goes to any Beach expecting to stay cool? I have been fried several times out there especially when I was tethered to a show car. The forecast may seem pleasant but it's all chamber of commerce propaganda! But seriously, wear a T-shirt under those wool car club jackets. That's all I'm saying. Should be a great time as always.

I LOVE to attend Concourse events, there's something about being invited to an event and dressing up in floppy hats once in a while. Amelia Island is on my bucket list as well.

I'm not throwing rocks at anybody. Read it all as light hearted banter but this is not my first Califormia excursion. I spent a lot of time surfing the entire coastline several years ago. While the water is cool (cold by my standards) the beaches can still get hot on a sunny day. My advice to the fellow Southeasterner was based only on my experience from having lived in both climates. Take a jacket. It gets chilly at night and stays chilly on into the morning but be prepared to get hot after the fog burns off. If it gets clear and sunny you will get a sunburn. Take a hat. That is all I was really trying to convey. Didn't mean to ruffle anybody's feathers. Regards

I told you so!

Someone mentioned Hilton Head being on par with Amelia. IMO, not so. Amelia, I believe, to be the second-rated show with Meadow Brook third.

For those drooling over the GM show cars, a number of the cars salvaged from Warhoops will be at MB this year.

Our '56 Mark II convertible will be in the show, too. Look me up!

Can't miss me, or the car.

Barry,
Beautiful car. By the looks of the background I'm guessing the photo was at the 2009 Amelia show. If that is the case I recall the car. -You guys should check it out up close if you get the chance.- We had a channeled roadster in the pre-war race class that year just a bit farther down the same row you are in. Amelia is a great event. Well worth planning to see at some point for those who have never been. Regards-

I sold my motorcycle last year by parking it right outside of the event with a For Sale sign on it- I had it sold the next day. It was just a kind of ratty old '74 Honda CB750. I think its a pretty good event.

Actually, that was taken at Amelia in 2004. You can tell because there are no condos in the background.

We were at Amelia this year with the '55 Porsche "Continental" Cabrio. It took 3rd in the Hagerty Junior Judging.

Barry, I read your build-up of the camper some time ago. You need to post a link to it out on the thread here. Amazing work.

Anybody who likes cars should enjoy a top-level concours. I've only been to one, Pebble Beach in 1985. All of the existing Bugatti Royales were collected in once place for the first time since they were made. Fantastic display of machinery. Didn't care about the rich folk and they didn't care about me. But that didn't interrupt my enjoyment one bit. I'd go again in a heartbeat.

23. That sums it all up.....If your a car guy, you MUST go to one in your life.

Or....5 as this years PB will be for me!

In fact....Just got this press release....as I was typing...

50th Anniversary of Ferrari 250 GT Short Wheelbase Berlinetta
Honored at 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
Storied Gran Turismo Established Ferrari's Commercial Success
While Expanding its Racing Reputation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
<table style="margin-bottom: 6px; font-family: Times New Roman,Times, serif;" width="100%" border="0" cellpadding="5" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-size: 10pt; font-family: Times New Roman,Times, serif;" rowspan="1" colspan="1" align="left"> PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (July 14, 2010) - It is difficult to find new superlatives when discussing Ferrari. The company's cars and racing heritage have been examined, considered and written about repeatedly and in detail. Yet even in this rarified world of records and wins, automotive excellence and power, there are a few cars that have gained more significance than the rest. The 250 GT Short Wheelbase Berlinetta is one, and it will be celebrated at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on August 15.

Racing great Sir Stirling Moss, who serves among the Honorary Judges at the Pebble Beach Concours, is eager to see these cars take to the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. He drove a 250 GT SWB Berlinetta to four victories on racing circuits across Europe in 1961 and has high praise for the model: "It was beautiful to drive, reliable and stunning to look at. It always amazed me that the car had such an uncomplicated rear suspension. Although it was only three liters, I cannot think of any car that was better to drive, especially on difficult roads. It was one of those cars, that the more you drove it, the better she became.

"It was such a civilized car, that Rob Walker fitted the one I drove with a radio. This allowed me to tune in to the BBC and listen to not only my race, but also to hear how my competitors were doing!"

Enzo Ferrari's passion was racing. He brought to market a number of extraordinary cars meant for the road, but still racers at their core. The first car from Maranello that was intended from its beginnings to be built in quantity, Ferrari's 250 GT, was the finest high performance grand touring car in the world - and its sales success made the company's worldwide sports car and grand prix racing programs possible.

The ultimate 250 GT, the Short Wheelbase Berlinetta - the term "berlinetta" literally means little coupe in Italian - made its debut at the 1959 Paris Auto Show and was an immediate hit. A total of 165 were produced, 75 for serious competition. No two were exactly alike; features were often changed depending on the client's wishes and manufacturing expediency. The engine was the latest development from the original V-12. Depending on carburetion, camshafts, compression and other modifications, the engine produced 240 to almost 280 horsepower. During its brief period of production the SWB won numerous races around the world, including the GT class at Le Mans twice and the Tour de France twice.

The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance has chosen eight cars to provide a comprehensive overview of the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta in honor of its 50th anniversary. "It is an extraordinary assembly," said Ed Gilbertson, Chief Judge. "Fifty years ago the 250 GT Passo Corto - the Short Wheelbase Berlinetta - set the standard for dual purpose Ferraris. We think the cars selected will give Pebble Beach Concours guests insight into the magic and mystery of these special cars."

Among the cars invited to participate in the Concours celebration is the very first 250 GT SWB Berlinetta produced. It's the car that debuted at the Paris Auto Show in 1959 and also took 6th place overall at Sebring in 1960. This car is currently being returned to its '59 Paris Auto Show condition by Ferrari specialist Bob Smith.

Three of the renowned 1961 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competition cars will also grace the eighteenth fairway at this year's Pebble Beach Concours, including one of the cars that won its class at Le Mans. Only 21 of these high performance cars were produced. Factory built for racing with a special lighter chassis, subtle changes to the alloy body, and powered by the highest specification Tipo 168B engine, the Comp/61 (sometimes called a "SEFAC Hot Rod") delivered almost 300 bhp, reached 60 mph in five seconds and had a top speed of over 150.

One of these Comp/61 cars, owned by Joseph M. Barone and Vanessa Wong, is featured on the poster for the 2010 Pebble Beach Tour d'Elegance presented by Rolex. Restorer Wayne Obry explains, "Because of this car's original condition and racing provenance, we've picked a precise point in time - when it raced in the Tour de France in 1962 - and are restoring the car to that configuration. This was a period when the car's livery was especially attractive and for which we've found the most detailed photos. This is a powerful, beautiful car."

In addition to celebrating the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta, the 60th annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance will feature Alfa Romeo, Jaguar and Pierce-Arrow and will showcase Italian designer Ghia. Additional special classes focus on the centennial of the Indianapolis 500, Hot Rod Lakesters and Bonneville Racers, and Prewar American Motorcycles.

Just got an e-mail that the Meadow Brook Concours has updated it's site.

http://www.meadowbrookconcours.org/

Another aspect of these shows is automotive art. You can expect to see some of the best. The man that did this year's poster for Meadow Brook is Gerald Freeman.

When the Mark II took BOC at MB in 2004 we commissioned Gerald to do a painting for us, commemorating the win, as it was a huge deal for us. A week after the show Gerald took a film camera (remember those?) and I took my digital and drove back out to the mansion for a photo session. He burned through 6 rolls and I took a bunch of shots. We met a week later and, by consensus, picked this shot to be turned into a painting.

Article on Gerald. http://www.airportjournals.com/Display.cfm?varID=0510014

Every Concourse is different. I think the hopes for elite, and trully prestine classic cars is the hoal, butthe event promotoers are t the mercy of those who participate.

Bonez, Barry rebuilt that trailer from an old travel trailer. Go to the AACA.org website and search the Forum for a step by step feature.
