Anybody can run a 350. Might cost less and make more horse power than a 283, but ain't near as cool.

A good 283 definetly sounds cool.

20 or so years ago I saw a 57 chevy with a stout 283/4 speed that had dual exhaust with small pipes (1 3/4"?). I still use that car as a baseline for perfect exhaust note.

Go with the 283. I had one in my '58 Chevy and it moved down the road just fine. The 350 is so common its boring.

1/8" over bore and some grinder work and a 283 is pretty much identical to a 350, Weaker main webs but should work

    M/T sold a 4" stroker crank in '64

Really someone that knows more about the oiling could answer this, Why cant you turn down a 400 crank to small journal??

i have had three 283's and i like them alot,,plus the fact when anybody asks what you have you dont say 350 like most of everybody does,i like to be different:)

  9. 283/700R4.. A 700R4 makes everything better. The deeper 1st gear, will help with the lack of low-end torque w/ the 283. I've been running a 350/700R4 for 14 years now. Either way, you can't go wrong!

I wonder if Scat makes a cast steel 3" stroke large journal crank??? If they don't, they should!

  11. i dont understand this, wich is better shape? sure a 283 is older, thus some folks say its cooler. but its not a flat head. so tradition isnt there to much anyway. why not use a 350, cheaper, looks the same, makes more power.

its not going in a little coupe, so id go with the bigger, wasnt that the point of hot rodding anyway?

  12. 283. speaking of cranks, my 283 came with a forged steel crank from the factory. just another cool thing about 283s.

not all 283's had a forged crank...
btw, a 283 or a 350 is STILL a small block chevy (common as dirt....) so who really gives a shit?
    me?
i've got a 400/400 combo that's going in the coupe...
    yep, STILL a sbc....

As far as forged crankshafts go, all of the sbcs had them from '55-'63. Some (but not all) 283s had cast cranks from '64-'67, and I've never seen a cast crank in a small journal 327.

People will always be divided and always have their fav's.. Go with whatever you want and it will work for you. Both the 283 and the 350 are great little power plants with mass parts availability.

283 is a great engine but I think a 350 would be better all around. you could always use the 283 untill you come across a 350.
