Any one know about buick torque tubes?

I was curious if anyone knows what rear end grease to put in a buick torque tube? Gettin ready to go to Heavy Rebel and need to top it off. Thanks for any info.

 

Just the usual 90W or 85-140W . Orignally 90W ,nothing odd about that rear end.

 

I think I may have a problem! Seems as if tranny fluid is making its way to the differential.

 

Is it automatic trans fluid or stick shift fluid? What kind of trans and drive shaft? Is it Buick?

There should be a seal so the trans oil doesn't get into the torque tube, as I recall. I'll check my Parts Manual.

There is a seal in the end of the transmission to keep the oil in the trans. Will burn the ring and pinion if not taken care of. Rear end a b***h to get out. Have to take rear and torque tube out as one piece. Word of caution the bo0lts holding the coil springs are LEFT hand thread

 

You can determine the rate of transfer, easy; Figure out how much you are losing in the transmission. If it's a little bit of tranny fluid every few hundred miles, just change the oil in the rear end as necessary. Replacing the oil in the rear end once in a while might be more practical than major repairs.

 

Thanks guys, I might try changing the oil to see how long it stays gear oil. Just got the car a few months ago and have not got to drive it much, so could have been a problem before? Taking it on a 100 mile trip this weekend, hope it holds up.

 

The torque tube does not contain (in a perfect world) any fluid. The drive shaft runs inside it. You either fill up the rear end or the transmission. Good info on those left-handed threads, BB.

 

I have my 49 Buick (with a dynaflow) in the shop now. I had the trans rebuilt by some clowns in Atwater and although the puddle under the car is smaller, the rear end still fills up with ATF running down the torque tube. I found an NOS torque ball and bought an updated seal kit. Hopefully that will stop the leak. I'm temped to drill a hole at the end of the tube and let it drain out rather than fill the rear end. I won't actually do that, but I don't know what else to do if this next fix doesn't work.

 

I cant seem to find a drain plug on my diff? found the fill plug but no drain. Any one have any clues?

 

Remove one of the bottom bolts, or syphon it out thru the fill plug with a pump.
