T-5

whats going on ...... I am ready for my T5.... What years , makes, models are going to work on my 1951 flathead.....I really just want to buy one rebuilt from ebay out of a mustang .... so if you could give me all the information i need to just buy one that would be great....

I haven't actually done this but I seem to remember the trans of choice was a General Motors S10 pick up T5 that was behind a 4 cylinder. Something about the gearing being perfect for a flathead and the shifter position is just right for vintage vehicles. Don't quote me on this, I just think that is what I read somewhere. This might give you a direction to head.

and where should the shift link be located , closer to the tailshaft or near the center of the tranny

Everyone has their preferences as far as T5 ratios and there is everything you ever wanted to know about it on the internet.
The type of car, how it is to be driven, and the driver preference all come into play.
IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT, it is easier to go to a transmission shop and
have one assembled to your specs.
Trying to find a used one with all the DESIRABLE features is almost impossible.
For me it is the one with the B/W 202 ID number.

Mine is a simple 3 point mounting. 2 front engine mounts and a pad under the transmission tailshaft. The rear pad is on the same belly band the rear wishbone attaches to. No pics of that.

These are poor pics but you can get the general idea.

The trans we recommend with our kit is the 85/92 S-10/S-15 2 wheel drive trans. Up into 89 they had a manual speedo and after that they had an electric.

 

Search is your friend on this one. One of the more popular topics to say the least. PLENTY written about it.

And check the attitude at the door.

Just a bit of side info....
IF you have access to a machine shop, it is quite easy to make a short throw shifter
for a T5...
There are ones on the market to buy but they have one big flaw.
The throw is not as short as it could be.
You haven't really enjoyed a short throw T5 shifter till you have a
one two shift of 3 inches with a 15 inch stick.
It is almost orgasmal.

I made it by "ear"...
I didn't use or make any drawings..
Basically, it is the same as the store bought ones except the riser block is taller
to make the shifter rod extension longer and thus shorten the throw...
