Have an 8.8 and am looking to get the ring gear part number decoded.
This is stamped on the ring gear: E3TW DA 1139 5HD.
I have googled it but have come up empty.
    Anyone?

This is easy!! The ring and pinion set you have is a 3.55 :) I installed the same set of gears in my '91 5.0L er (scratch that) 5.8L car. :D

Your welcome !!! :) By the way, that's a great gear set for the street if you have a T-5 manual trans.

For those who want to know what ratio ring and pinion set you have, have a calculator handy.. Count the number of teeth you have on the pinion gear and the same with the ring gear. In Ravens case, his pinion gear has 11 teeth and the ring gear has 39 teeth. Divide 39 by 11 and you get a 3.545:1 ratio. Round that off to the next highest number and you get 3.55:1 :)

    In Fordspeak part number prefixes:
    "E" is 1980s...B-50s, C-60s, D-70s
Numeral "3" is year of the decade
"TW" indicates vehicle, various letter code combinations indicate models of cars, pickups, trucks, vans.etc.

There was also a 7.5" rear axle that came out before the 8.8".... But I don't think Ford had a 3.55 gear for that one... The 7.5's did have a 3.45 gear setup....

    I have a '79 Mustang with a 3.55 7.5 rear. It was a turbo 4 originally.

This one is the ten bolt rear cover with the two cut outs in each lower corner.
Great set for the street, but I need it for the strip.
Anyone instrested in a a narrowed heavy duty 8.8 with new brakes and a 3.55?

Why not just change the gears to whatever you want to use??... Next inline from the 3.55's are the 3.73's, 4.10, 4.56's and I think a 5.14 gear set also....... Check with Ford Performance Parts on the net.

    83

C denotes 60's (number is the year)
    D 70's
    E 80's

    etc
