I took a weekend trip through the southeastern United States to go see a land speed racing event put on by the East Coast Timing Association in Maxton, NC. The Maxton Monster Mile is a one mile paved course on an abandoned runway at the still functional Laurinburg/Maxton Airport. The facility, a former Army Airbase, was built in 1942 as a training base for gliders. Pretty cool stuff and this was my first experience at a land speed event. I took a ton of pictures and I've chosen a few to share with my fellow HAMBers. these first few show the general scene (out in the middle of nowhere at an airport)
entry fees for spectators are cheap and provide all access... even still, I couldn't get a good picture of the RMR uncovered
the racers were approachable for the most part, all I could get out of the driver of the esslinger 4 powered ranchero was, "still too lean..."
I was there on saturday and the weather was nice for racing. The sun was incredibly bright and I had no idea what my pictures were gonna turn out like. I'm not a photographer by any means... just enjoying the scene
