Just took the roof of the 51 to bare metal for a show this weekend. Whats the best thing to put on it, without having to clear it, that will prevent rust temporarily? Ive been told different things, soak a rag with WD40, vegetable oil, etc.

I can see bare metal for one event to show off your metal work but getting it down to bare metal just to have bare metal is pretty lame as far as I am concerned.

But if we see your "how I chopped my Chebbie or how I slicked the top out for paint" thread next week all is good in the world. See Saltflatsspeedshop's Bonneville sedan thread for reference. That puts the bare metal thing in the cool factor rather than the lame factor.

Clear will not stop it from rusting, first it'll yellow, then it'll rust right under it... seen it happen...

Captain Lee's from Masterseries PM Industries in NJ. 1800-833-8933 it will acid etch into the metal and remove rust and leave a zinc chromate coating, lightly sanded and primed and painted will never rust, we coat the sandblasted parts and put them away until ready for body work, they never rust, kind of turns the metal a grey color.

I asked this question a few days ago. Everybody I spoke with said do not use WD 40. I used transmission fluid and solvent (about a 2 to 1 ratio) with a scotchbrite pad. Leave a nice coating and you're in business.

hell i have been putting wd40 or atf on my truck for over a year now.

  17. they say to use gibbs because if you ever have any plans on painting it the WD40 is pretty hard to get all of it off.

WD40 = no, if you want to paint it without having a real hassle trying to clean all the oil from the WD40 off of it.

Gibbs = Yes, there is no substitute. Got ahead and buy a case of it because once you use it you will use it on everything. I havent touched a can of WD40 since I started using to Gibbs, thanks to the input on this site about Gibbs.
