I put on Nine Yards by the Black Angels and enjoyed it thoroughly. This is the perfect footage for me to get pumped up about the Jalopy SHowdown next weekend!!!! I'm hoping to get sideways in Andy's (thunderbirdesq's) roadster just like the good old days!!!!

    Ryan,
This is some great footage!!! If you're old like me, you know some of the faces, Roger Ward, Roger McCluskey, A J Foyt (boy is he young), Parnelli Jones. If we know the years, we could tell who some of the drivers of the cars by their numbers. For many years Roger Ward was 2, Roger McCluskey was 16. Number 1 was always the previous year's points champion. In some of the footage, A J Foyt was driving 1. You can tell from the red bandana he used to cover his face. I think there is some footage from the old Arizona State Fairgrounds dirt track.

Great stuff which brings back memories. Thanks.

Yep , The old AZ State Fairgrounds track for sure. At 2:04 the Flagman is in a Don Sanderson Ford 60 Convertible. One of my great regrets is I never saw a race there ,especially since I've lived here since '50. Would have loved seeing a Champ car race in the late 50s there. Funny thing is my Dad was pretty regular going to Manzy in that time frame, yet I don't think he ever went to a race at the Fairgrounds.

Thanx for an amazing glimpse of some of my racing heros. How did they get those big balls in that little drivers seat? As a kid I imagined them as outlaws in the bandanas, those screaming Offys were like nothing else. ~Sololobo~

The footage was very cool but the best thing for me was the driver lighting a cigarette in his car and then putting away the lighter in his race suit. You wouldn't ever see that now.

Great footage and love the expressions on Branson, Herk and Jud. Would be great to drop the music and dub in the roar of Offys, back in the day with no cages and no fear!

Thats insane....I feel like gettin' sideways in some dirt now. Pretty awesome watching that left front tire come off the track while the back ends trying to pass the front end.

Dusty heros, that's for sure. I'm all hyped because I'm going to see the non-wing sprinters at the Devil's Bowl tonight. Spinout.

I love the old USAC Champ cars...back when men were men!!!

Thanks for posting Ryan, it caused me to get lost for awhile on youtube.

  22. Damn Ryan part of that was a little hard to watch. I'm glad it ended with the driver still on this side of the grass.

Driven is the only word for them fellas that paved the way for us.

  23. Positively the best form of racing on the planet !! Lots of legends in the footage. The shots from Salem don't do it justice !! I would love to see more footage like this. My all time favorite era for champ cars. Thanks for posting !!! >>>>.

  24. AJ RULES! He is the real deal ....tough on the track or in the pits.

WOW. These guys were driven. WOW. Slim

In 1968 the USAC Champ Dirt Cars made their annual trek to Sacramento, CA. In this Jim Chini shot scanned from the 1989 Golden State 100 program, Mario Andretti leads Bud Tingelstad, Bill Vuckovich, and Gary Bettenhausen. The race was won by A.J. Foyt who pocketed $8,300. Bettenhausen was runner-up, Al Unser was third, Andretti fourth, and Bruce Walkup rounded out the top five. (Holtsman Family collection)

Its funny that most of the guys that were doing that were not kids - they look to be in the 30-40 age group. That means they are hard as nails no doubt.
