Another thread for the "History Archive", thanks for the pics, thankfully they resurfaced, since I missed them the first time they were on page 1.
An article was printed in a really neat French car magazine called "POWERGLIDE" regarding the photos/track. I wish knew how to speak French because there magazine has some quality, great looking cars I haven't seen before! -Etienne [Empire32] (photo editor for the magazine)... thanks for showing nice cars in your magazine unlike some of the magazines out these days!
Thanks from those of us that were there. In some ways those were the best of times. Today aint bad though.Great pics.
I was asking my dad about these pics. He was an old hot rodder and a pilot. He said that they used to be able to drag race at State Line Airpark (keep in mind he was born in 1950) so this is his young memories from a boy. I found a link about the park with some old pictures thought maybe you would be able to match up some background with the aerials. Very cool pics, I will keep asking around in KC to see if anyone knows where this was, it would be cool to find out. http://members.tripod.com/airfields_freeman/KS/Airfields_KS_E.htm
I don't know how I missed this thread when it hit over a year ago. I'll go on record as saying it couldn't have been any NHRA National either at Great Bend or Kansas City. Even though the safety rules were quite primative in the mid 50's, NHRA teck inspectors would have never allowed some of those cars to run...period. There were hundreds of air strips where local drags were put on, and these photos are for sure from one of these grass roots events, not an NHRA National or Regional race. Thanks for posting these, and for the members who have identified some of the car owners.
Yea looks like he decided to off road it before dragracing it. "It's ballast" HA! Great pics, thanks for sharing. Always dig finding local racing history.
thanks to you ! So, looks like you get the mag ? if not, you sould get it soon (the #13, just released).
I was reading through the thread to see if anyone mentioned the car in the back. I sure did. Thanks for the great photos.
Those are wire wheelcovers and he simply popped-off the fronts to drag it. Probably a J.C. Whitney type of accessory item.
Does anybody know anything about this car? Like did it have a Hemi in it around 1962? And did it have a Chevrolet truck dash/gauge cluster? I think I may know where it is. The heavily channeled roadster.
Looks like just a cigarette. But definitely something in his lips. These pictures are great, thanks for posting. It helps young'ns like me imagine what it was like "back in the day". It's like the bringing back of memories that I never had.
Look at the short wheelbase on the '32 Coupe next to the cig-smokin' guy in the tub. Looks like he slid a '35-'41 front end with spring-ahead under the '32 crossmember. Bet that steered squirrelly...
