I worked in a Linc-merc shop back in 1968 in NY & we still got a few edsels in for repairs.One time the shop was broken into and the robbers loaded up a edsel with everyones tools & drove it away!!! We always joked about searching a 2 block area & we'd find the car cause they ditched it when they realized what they took!!lol
The best edsels where the last year, they where just a ford with edsel body parts so they where kinda care free.Most of the early edsels where too"Advanced" they where a little ahead of the times.
Good driving cars, handled & rode pretty good for boats.

Not only was Edsel introduced during a recession, when sales of intermediate cars dropped off dramatically, but there were also quality control problems. They quickly earned a reputation for having mechanical problems.

From what I've gathered, Edsel's death was compounded by several contributing factors. Mainly, it was intended to fill a marketing gap in the Ford family that didn't really exist. It was planned as a step between Ford and Mercury; for the hip young professionals that had outgrown Ford, but weren't making enough yet to buy a Lincoln. Why not just buy a Merc? Or hold onto that Ford? Exactly. Also, Edsel did do extensive product research, IN THE EARLY FIFTIES. By the time they rolled out in 58, the data was grossly outdated and the public's tastes had shifted. All the data they had compiled, they pieced together themselves, without checking the final product with the public again. So that requested "high profile grille", and "fins", and everything else regurgitated into the Edsel. I've also heard that they were delivered to dealers requiring final assembly and missing parts (my wagon WAS missing a seat bolt when I tore it down...) I don't claim to be a historian, just what I've skimmed off the Internet (Edsel.com is a great resource.) So, we only had the Edsel for 58,59, and 60. The 58s def have the coolest styling, and were based off a Merc chassis. The 59s still had the vertical grille, but slightly scaled down. Already cut-backs were in place, as these were based off a Ford chassis. Personally, the 60s have no defining character, they just look like a Galaxy with a Pontiac grille...

I scored my Edsel for $750, and I feel a personal responsibility to customize it in a manner that would reflect what could have been had Edsel sales grown into 59, and the car became more luxurious. This includes:
The bigger 58 Edsel grille and slightly more svelte 58 front bumpers.
The 58 Lincoln's bitchin canted individual headlights/fenders.
A 61 Chrysler's slanted front turn signals.
A 61 Olds' rear bumper, valance, and quarters with those sweet fins trailing off the wheelwells.

Incidentally, if anyone's selling some 58 Lincoln fenders or a 61 Olds rear bumper, drop a brother a line please!

I know where 2 edsels are in my town. One belongs to my boss, its something like a 58 or 59 Wagon. No engine, but the body is in great shape. Missing the 2 rear side windows. He was asking 900$ for it last year.

The other one is sitting in a gravel pit/state yard. Theres almost nothing left of it, and its smashed pretty hard in the front. Havent been able to find out who owns it yet.

To me the perfect Edsel is the 1958 which epitomisizes the EDSEL look. Horse collar grille and split bumpers.

What other Edsel stands out as a single year design? 59-60's merged with FORD looks.

Welcome to the HAMB and good luck getting your wagon back on the road. Looks like a pretty solid and complete piece to start with.

Also, remember to put a carriage return (Enter) between the image links you post here. A post thats 6700+ pixels wide doesn't fit well on a monitor that's only 1200 or 1400 pixels wide. I thought I was going to have to hook up a couple extra screens.

I'll have to scan a pic of my old edsel. It was a 58 pacer 2 door. a very long story indeed about why I no longer have it but the end result was crushed by a tree. I think so far it has been my most missed and most favorite car. I had big plans for it too! damn. can't belive it has been 12 years.

I am an Edsel fan but have never owned one. One of my best memories from my low teen years was when I got a free ride in the coolest car in our small town. It was a -58 2 door HT with a customized grill in the shape of a spider web. Dude driving was the coolest cat we small boys ever knew so it was pure heaven to sit in his car. This was almost 40 years ago, damn I'm getting old.
