    I decided to start a new thread since i ended up re-doing just about everything. here's a link to the first- http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=430533

    The first thing i did was make a new rear crossmember out of 2x3. then i made all new spring hanger brackets, shock mounts, and chromoly trailing arms. i also shortend up the wheelbase to 104'. then i made a new tranny mount because i got a new 383 stroker and a polished th400. im tring to decide if i want to get smaller front tires to change the rake. the first is with the tires deflated and the second aired up. What do you think?

    Rake and tire size both look good now, in my opinion that is an overall well proportioned car. But, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, so to each his own. I would roll it just the way it is.

    If possible, bring the rad shell down inch and a half. Other proportions are good.

    Also, your traction bars will buckle at the apex of the triangle when you start honkin' on that stroker.

    Considering the fact that he still has a leaf spring back there and not coilovers I HIGHLY doubt that!!

    Yeah your rear suspension wil not work that way.

    There is a reason for ladder bars.

    Or make it a 3-link.

    The leaf spring won`t hold it

    I think it look's good both way's, will be a bitch looking at traffic lights with the rake. Top look's to have at least a 5" chop. Screw the traffic light's go with the rake. PINCHER

    The point of a ladder bar is to triangulate the force of the rear end movement to a single forward point. These aren't doing that. It looks really strong up to a point, then they are going to bend about a foot in front of the rear axle.

    4.50/4.75-16 is the perfect front tire size. Maybe 5.00 if thats all that is available. Proportions look pretty good, I dig the amount of chop.

    yea, my grandpa had it sittin in his old streetrod project and i swapped motors. im not at abe's anymore but hit me up if you want to come check it out.


    will i still have this problem with a panhard?

    Yes, you will.
    My english is not good enough to put it in simple words, but you need to chop off
    the upper triangle bars and build a third link(upper) from the top of the differential to
    the front pivots of the other bars(lower link) .

    Tman on here built it in his T Tub a few years ago.

  22. The deal with your present ladder bar system is you basically only have 1 bar for 3/4 the length of the bar. It will fold up like a soup sandwich!!! Trust me I have been there on my roadster. Make a new set with the top bar bending down close to the bottom and put lots of Gussets in between if you have a floor clearance problem or just run the upper bar out to the end of the bottom one if you don't. Use lots of Gussets!!

    Ladder bars have to have the front pivot close by the driveshaft/transmission not
    far apart like his setup.
    That`s why i suggested the 3 link.

    This may in fact be an issue with the mega torque 383? Think outside normal configurations and see if a third link could be made that runs rearward from the top of the rear pumpkin to your transverse rear spring mount? It needs to be that it don't bind through the entire travel of the suspension, what you need to shoot for is an additional limit on the rear end twist when you hammer the throttle! Computer model would be best but real world works too! Another issue will be the additional power the polished tranny brings to the table...we all know that's going to add 150 or so HP!:D:eek: Good luck and great looking build!

    I didn't think about them being mounted to the frame either. Yeah, thats another no-no.

    There are a bunch of threads on here about making ladder bars but this was the first one to come to mind.

    UPDATE!!!

    My suspension is done and im just finishing up a few other things on the chassis before it heads off to powdercoating.

    heated and bent the f-1 shock mounts

    heated and bent the spindles

    notched frame so the spring doesn't bottom out

    mounted the brake pedal and master cylinder

    mounted the steering box and bent the pitman arm

    and mounted the wishbones

    I finally got the body squared and mounted today. i made the mounts out of pre-fabbed tabs and im using 1/8 in. rubber in between.

    That lower bar is almost parallel to the leaf spring. It might ride OK as long as there's not much in the form of compression. That rear under normal highway cruising shouldn't move more than a few inches. If it doesn't try and push backward when compressed it might work. I like the look so far...
