Paint & Chemicals are a funny thing. Waterbase= Bad...Imron= Good

  3. It looked just fine until you started messing with it.

  4. And to think that the owner paid to have that done....I'd be pissed!!!

Actually a blessing for you if you are repainting it. It will make prep a breeze.

    To clarify a couple questions,

The whole car is peeling off the same way, not just spots.

Once we peeled, then took a air hose and it blew off into confetti, the only thing that seem to stick was the few places that had been sanded on the base coat.

Oh and we do know it was Sherwin Williams paint

And I did forget to mention the car is a Delahaye 1940 something.

The last time I saw something like that was when I was in college. The guy spraying next to me just couldn't wait to get in his freshly painted truck and go to the corner gas station for a cold drink after his hard work. Guess what? His hard work ended up looking just like that fender too. I laughed so hard, I got hiccups! I wonder ....never mind.

That is caused from using different brands of material. Base coat and clear are not from the same company.

When I traded back for my 48 after I had sold it a year and a half before it had about three quickie spray jobs over the gold paint I put on it. Most of that paint came off in the car wash late one night when after It started to peel I just kept after it but that car is a whole lot worse then the truck that had left over paint used on it.

I don't imagine that rig is going to be an easy fix as I would suppose it will have to be sanded down through the sealer that is on it and the process started over.

Curiosity, then amazement, then laughter, then sadness for the guy that paid for that work.

I'm thinking with a can of 3M spray-glue, that would make some badass wall art.

some people pay big money for re-usable paint. Can you send me those sheets? Seriously, was that a waterborne job? peace

  15. Wow, really? And you did not notice the paint bubbles and such that were in the fender (towards the front) as he peeled away that coat?

I remember seeing a bunch of Plymouth Neons in the late '90's that had the paint peeling off of them like that. Only the purple Neons though.

I think you just answered the question that I've seen a few threads started with...

"What's the easiest way to strip a car?"

That is one of the craziest things I have seen. It looks like a wrap but its paint? Looks like a few steps were missed. Maybe the old painter is getting ready to get into the vinyl business. :) Can you get a warranty for the customer on the paint product? Very sad to see someone without their car for months to end up with that as the result.

Why did you say you were not sure if it was Sherwin williams paint? Were you referring to house paint? or automotive ?

funny, everybody sez water paint BUT back in the mid 70's i bought a 72 camaro (hence my hate of camaros) that the paint came off like that.
10 bucks worth of quarters at the car wash and it was stripped....
no idea why it came off like that but i'm willing to say it was before water-based paint....

Now im not saying this is it, but lateley the latest daddy's boy trend over here is to bring their X5 BMW or Porche Cheyenne to be turned matte black at the body shop, and im
not talkin about paint, its a wrap like sticker that gets heat shrinked on the car that
can be taken off almost as easy as they it got stuck.
Now, any chance this is the same crap?
if not this is weird! :O

I for one will not blame water based paint, if done correctly it will NOT do that. I blame the painter, bad prep and not understanding the products they used.

i agree, can't stress the point enough on how prepping a car correctly can make or break a paint job. i've seen guys that would spray urethane clear over laquer and the paint would'nt peel quite like that but if you took a blow gun to, you would have enough clear chips to have a ticker tape parade! bad prep and mixing different materials equals what you see there.
