I'm wanting to take my truck down to bare metal. Just for this summer until I decide paint. It's a 1956 GMChevrolet. Just wanting to get some ideas of what it may look like. And I wanted to see all your cars/trucks before they got paint.

Here's a couple of my '37 in bare metal.......I almost hate to paint it, it's had a ton of metal work, including chopped roof widened rear fenders, custom tail light fairings and bottom panels replaced all the way around.

That's a thing of beauty just as it sits!

  5. Took me about a weekend in the garage to do mine. then soaked it with Gibbs oil so that it wouldn't flash rust..works great.

Wow, bautiful car bill3337 ! I wouldnt dare take my entire car down to metal like that at one time. I fight surface rust even in my garage. Then again , Id imagine the dryer being in there doesnt help....

What's the best way to get it from rusting? I mean I love the look of the bare metal and am going to do all the metal work on the body eventually. Does clear over bare metal look right?

I'm using Hi-Temp Satin Clear on various pieces on my engine -fan, pulleys, PS reservoir, brackets, hard vacuum lines, road draught tube, etc. I usually hit the piece with a grinder and flap disk to remove rust and crap, wipe it down with brake cleaner, wipe and let dry then use rattle can H-TSC. From what I can tell, there seems to be a very small amount of air that gets trapped under the clear that makes it age slowly -not rusting but a quiet aging/slight discolouration that makes it look like it was done many moons ago (which is what I wanted)....

I've heard that some metal treatments that sink into pores of the metal (they are actually a very thin gun metal oil) cause havoc with a subsequent paint job.....

I did the tank on my old Honda rare steel. The orange colored parts I rusted using table salt and a process I have been perfecting.

I've heard that to clear a car in bare metal and not have it start rusting a person needs to let the car sit outside in the hot summer sun on a dry day and then shoot it.
The guy that said this was talking about his A-coupe (that was rusting through) but he said his buddy did this and his has been alright for a good long while. He had been drinking, so I dunno?

Yeah, you need to get as much moisture out of the metal as possible. The first few things I did rusted through after 6 months or so. No matter what you do, it's gonna rust again and need attention.

The nice thing is, you can see where it's rusting right away!

It's not this way because I want it to be, it's because I'm out of work...
