Hello hambers I wanted to say thank you for your help on my past threads and I wanted to start a new thread and ask what rear ends are you running in your model a's?

I have a 30/31 coupe and a 30/31 pu coupe has mild 302 that i plan to pump up before to long and pu has a 368 lincoln y block

    both are fenderless...maybe fenders later....

I wanted to ask what rear ends you are running?and from what year/make/model donor vehicle you got them out of =)

and what do they measure backing to backing and drum face to drum face?

and what year and make model a do you have

any help would be appreciated and have a great day

    thanks hamb

I'm running a 31 spline axle, 9" ford , out of a 1978 ford truck in my 28 model A sedan . I don't think I could have asked for a better fit . I got about a 1 1/2" space on either side of the body . And she lays low !! About 58" or 59" backing plate to backing plate .With L-78 x15 mounted on mid 50's caddy wheels .

  13. Same here.....mine's out of a 78' Ford Truck. 59" backing plate to backing plate. I have mine in a 30' Model A Tudor. I've got about 1 1/2" space on either side. It's pretty low. I have 40 Merc. wheels (5" wide) with Tall ass Firestone bias plias. Fits perfect without any modifications. It has a heavy duty housing. 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern. I paid $100 bucks for it.

Im running an 8 inch! In my opinion they are prefect for model A's. Also think about it, you dont really want a spool or locker with a model A. They are so light, it would be very dangerous when you let the smoke out of the rears!

    I have a '29 Tudor Sedan. I'm running an 8.8 from a '92 Mustang and it's been converted to 5 lugs (formerly 4 lugs).

I'm using a 1979 Ford LTD wagon 8.5 rear axle, and I was able to put in a Mustang 8.8 locker and 3.27 gears into. it clears the body sides just fine on a channeled car (no fenders, obviously)

i heard all the stories! your rear end will come around in the rain. (Cool) It will plow straight ahead through corners! It'll tear the rear tires up blah, blah, blah.
i ran spool in my 29 for over 2 years. No problems. 2180lbs with my big ass in it. i had everything on the back from 15" wide tires to skinny bias ply silvertowns. drove it 6o miles one day in a total down pour in a cancer run for an ABATE brother. Rearend was always right there behind me. never did pass me up.
Heres a shot at the Shelton drags. Held pretty straight for me even after the smoke let up.
Question would be how do you get smoke out of the rears without a locker /spool hmmm

Bottom line: ya drive it like what it is.

I'm using an 8 inch rear from a '65 Mustang. Can't recall the width, but it's pretty much perfect for an 'A'.Unfortunately,I've had to use adaptors to get a 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern.

I have a S10 rear end with 7 inch wheels. It is tad to wide. I plan trying 15x6 steel wheels with a four inch back space.

Got a '58 Fairlane 9" in my '31 coupe.51" between the backing plates,56" flange width. It's fenderless and has some good meats on it,fits well.We put a 8" in my pops '31 full fendered roadster.49" backing plate to backing plate and 54" flange width out of a '70's Maverick. These rears are getting scarce and pricey though.I have measured 8.8's out of Ranger pick-ups to be 52" between the plates.Good width, funky driveshaft flange plate however.
