The garage that he ahs it parked in and the pic of it sitting outside with the front half showing and the stucco building in the background looks to be like the trac homes where I grew up. The only problem is the entire westside of Vegas looks like that. Also there are so many (believe it or not) ranches throughout and on the outskirts of Vegas its rediculous. Then again they consider 1-4 acres a ranch.

  4. I disagree as a custom they are definitley improved upon. They are sleeker and more organic as a custom should be. As a hot rod you are absolutely right they are perfect as is but you are then talking about two completely different build styles that require different modification(or lack there of) to accomplish. To each his own I guess.

Didn't Steve Hendrickson's (R.I.P.) dad have a chopped and channeled car that made a trip to the salt back in the day?

The car was put back together and gotten running by a good friend of mine C Hascall. I bought it from him, and took the car to the next level. It was Hamb member owned, and is still Hamb member owned, though a different one. I sold a couple of cars so that I could focus on my '39 Convert sedan that is chopped and channeled as well as a '36 Coupe that is chopped only.
Check your memory banks - It was on eBay for almost a week, and one time only - it had never been on the market before that. Sold before the auction ended - I believe the car was for sale for a whopping 5 days. That shouldn't have taunted you too long, and I honestly don't remember talking to you about it. Talked to a lot of folks, but none from England. The car was purchased before Ryan featured it, not long before, but before.
No need to worry anyhow, it's in great hands - and the current owner here in the US will care for it and respect it as it should be - taking it to the next level! As it should be!! Keep the flow. Tim :)

It's not a Coupe but it may give you some ideas. My Uncle Bob's '39, Bell Gardens, California, early '50's.

Not a coupe but a chopped and channeled 40 roadster.
A famous 60's NZ hot rod called Wild Honey.

I have a pretty wasted 36 shell and frame here, and was debating about channeling it the width of the frame when I do something with it...doesnt look like there is gonna be much room between the frame/body ...anyone have any in progress pics of a channel job on one??

Valley Customs also did a nice channel job on the Glen Hooker 1939 Mercury.
Car Craft did a two part how to on it.

  22. Great article Rik, more inspiration to get my 39 Merc back on the road including a channeling job.

  25. I did cruise the El Matador everyday back in the seventies and it was fantastic. Needed money, had to sell it.
The Blue one is was El Crispo, I think, by Barris and was built to copy the success of the El Matador.
As mentioned, the lack of running boards was a weak spot in the styling. I think that was part of the success of the El Matador was the swooping running boards.
