I have a 223 powered 58 Custom 300 that served me as daily transportation for a couple years making a 110 mile round trip to work. Dependable as a rock and got about 18mpg with a three on the tree and 3.50 gears. You won't regret sticking with the six. Hardened exhaust seats are a highly recommended upgrade on old Ford motors though. I've seen many ford heads with seriously recessed valves.

Yeah, thanks anyway ratcaddy - don't think it'd be worth the drive, haha

Thanks for all the info and comments, think I'm gonna stick with my old clunker 262 or find a good running 223. 6's are just too cool, and 302's just......aren't

It looks like a 262, there appears to be a horizontal rib ABOVE the dipstick tube which is a sure sign of a 262. Timing cover mounted fuel pump means it's a 1964 engine I believe, the earlier 262's were on the block.

I think the costs for the stuff below are pretty high - I paid about half or less, buying that either 'good used' or 'shopping carefully' for the intake ($50 used), carb (Holly 600, $60 used), gauges ($50 for all 3) shifter (converted column shift to work), distributor ($65 new on ebay). Kept the serp belt; electric fan was $40 or so; motor came with rear sump. No dress up kit either :)

Mounts, u-joints, driveshaft, seem about right. Assuming the transmission is an AOD (not electronic control) then the swap can be done for less - at least $500 less than your total. Which makes it about the same as the Y-block.

The required computer to make a newer-than-AOD transmission work would cost a few hundred more. That might be the make-or-break point in your cost calculations.

Have a y block 292 and 3 speed column shift in my 62 unibody and I think its awesome, great power, there super torquey and plus its a y block.

Id have to say a roller 302 is a nice motor, ditch the 4 speed for sure and get a c4 or c6 if you can find one. I think it be ur best bet. Thats my .02 fro ya

I was driving a green 59 shortbed with a 350/350 combo that was pretty nice and quick, sucked down the gas but it pass anything else. I know I know for you "hardcore" ford guys thats sacriledgious!? ( i dunno how to spell that).

I just picked up a crate 302 for my 61 I was told that a late 80s aod trans would be the best opt. For a highway truck any info on how accurate that is ? I just want an auto transmission the truck is all stock 223 3 speed on the column 1/2 ton 1961 f100 anything helps thanks. Sorry if I'm off topic here

If you want a six cylinder so bad consider a Ford 300 cui, they are a pretty impressive engine with heaps of torque.
Here is my engine swap thread

I wish I had gone the Y block route.
