I thought I would add that the Mustang in the first photo is quite likely the Bowani (ex Tasca A/FX) with Sam Auxier.

I have spent countless hours looking at this thread, and I'm still only halfway through it. The power of the HAMB is amazing. Thanks Royalshifter.

If I had to guess this is an attempt to get the driver away from anything that goes "BOOM!" or burns. 'Course if he gets into the wall he's gonna end up looking like Cotton Hill.

I have an idea. Change the name of this thread to:
"History of Drag Cars in Motion.......Or Not."

That way, those with PC running thru their veins won't have anything to bitch about, won't try to impose their will on everyone else and the rest of us can get on with enjoying the best thread I've ever run across.

I believe that is the ex-TASCA Mustang but before Sam drove the car. I think it was Carson Hyman in the car then.

Photo & Commentary by Doug Peterson
"Jack Chrisman (near lane) in the Ed Losinski, Leroy Neumeier, Amos Satterlee, Harry Duncan, yadayada blown Chrysler digger, verses Lefty Mudersbach in his tandem Chevy that used to be Money Olds car. As you can see, I had to fight my way thru the mob to get this shot. Top Gas final, Riverside RCWY, May 1959."

The next four shots are beauties from Ron Johnson who also does the commentary.
"This was the first drag race I ever attended that had real names. I took pictures with a 5$ camera. Here are a couple of shots. First is Cliff Bedwell (on the right) and Emery Cook. It was real black magic. Lodge platinum tip plugs soaked in benzene between rounds and cleaned with a toothbrush. Nitro in gallon cans. Tricks to lubricate the carbs. Setto Postoian and Garlits were both there running in the 140's. Cook and Bedwell worked over Garlits car. Tuned him up. Gave him plugs. Set his timing. He made the best run of his life (154 or so) and after the race he went home to Seffner or Tampa or wherever and reworked the car. Lowered the engine, narrowed the rear end, put a nose on the car. A couple of months later he set the world on fire with his 176. Second shot is Don Maynard of the Speed Sport crew, spying on the west coast hot dogs, Emery Cook in sunglasses. Next pic is Lyle Fisher posed by Speed Sport roadster. Fourth is Emery again on a run. Cook and Bedwell had best times of the event (166 mph and about 9:30's) but I believe Setto won the $1,000 savings bond."
