I've shipped wheels by UPS with no box, just securely duct taped two together.Wheels, cycle frames ,steel stuff can be shipped that way.If it's a finish painted item a box is necessary to protect the finish.

  3. I usually use the Post Office believe it or not. I shipped 5 rims in two separate boxes through them (plus numerous grilles and other stuff). The thing is this: the total length plus girth has to be under 108 line inches. Weight can be up to 70 lbs I think. You might have to make two boxes, but you can ship for less than 80 through them.

I know you already shipped yours but for other interested parties, you can pick up bigger boxes also at your local appliance or hardware store.

For shipping I like usps then either Greyhound or Amtrak. Amtrak works like Greyhound it is terminal only at both ends and not at just a passenger pickup site. I probably would use Greyhound or Amtrak more but my closest terminal for either is about a 50 minute ride one way so I try to time my big sales if I know i'm going in that direction.
I can't wait, we are getting a closer Amtrak station in about a year.
