<o></o>I needed to bead roll some 16 gauge bed panels for the truck I building. My problem: a couple of the beads were 19 inches from the edge of the panel. Most typical lower end bead rollers only have 18 inches of throat depth and are rated at 18 gauge capacity. So, not having access to a larger machine, here is my solution.<o></o>

Having a power feed would also make the job a little nicer as it would be absolutely uniform.

  11. That is a Tech Week winner. To bad it is not Tech Week. The good thing though, is that is solves a problem that I have right now! Did you machine the roller or did you source it commercially?

LOL:D I hear you. When I first started on a Bridgeport a power feed was a real luxury so you soon got accustomed to turning the cranks until your arms were about to fall off. Operating one every day for 8-10 hours soon got you in condition but being retired now I seldom use mine for more than an hour or so a day. It's just a lot more enjoyable making hot rod parts than details for machinery.

Great idea! I have never thought of using a mill for that sort of thing. Did you use a R8 adapter shank that screws onto the roller yoke? I need to copy your method, hope you don't mind. Really nice work by the way.

That's pretty cool that you have one of those in your garage. Do you also have a lathe and the phase converter to run them? I have to depend on the bosses good will and open time to get any of my machining done.

some sheet metal equipment and a bunch of other junk, thats what the wife says anyway, and yea all my equipment is 3 phase so I got a phase converter.

Thats a pretty sweet idea.Just wonder if there would be any adverse affects on the spindle bearings with the upward pressure. We had one machine in our shop that all we used it for was drilling.Seamed like we had to replace the spindle bearings more often in that machine. You must lock this in low gear with the lowest rpm to keep it from turning?

And no three phase converter problems with this one. Nice.

    burl,
I just locked the spindle brake, I used a block under the quill stop, the quill lock won't hold the amount of pressure on the spindle. My beads are .200 dp.which is a pretty well defined. As far as damaging the spindle bearings, you'll have to use your on judgement on that, I cranked the bed up in .025 increments per pass, table cranked easily, hope this helps.
