I put in a new speedometer cable and during the test drive I hear some weird grinding and the needle wigs out and goes dead so I'm 99% sure it's the speedometer. Can these be repaired or do I have to either send to a specialist or buy a new one? I really want it fixed since it's original...

Someone can likely be more precise but here is what I do in this situation. Start taking it apart to find the problem. (Gauge, cable, etc)

Replace or start taking apart what's broke and figure out why.

Actually, IMO it sounds like the cable.

Sounds more like the cable messed up. I'm going to send you and PM. There are all kinds of speedometer repair shops. Butch/56sedandelivery.

take it out a put a little lube around the input shaft--put an electric drill in reverse and try it--this is not real precise but I've found if I test one this way with my 18V makita--if it's 38 or so on low and about 55 on high then the speedo is ok--again, not real scientifc I know--but have done several 57 speedos for test and thats what the good one said--usually grinding noise is a cable

Awesome, thanks man! I just called Steve's and he sounds like a solid guy. I had no idea there were speedometer repair places so close. Remember kids, Google is your friend...

Edit: Just pulled the speedo cable out and the tranny end is demolished. I'm guessing the speedo is frozen. I'm gonna pull it and bring it to a rebuild place. Thanks again for the help...
