Just got on it and cut the address its, http://www.metalmeet.org They did the site over and I was redirected Pat
It has been running, but they shut it down for short periods of time to install upgrades and make some fixes, it would not have been bad but the latest working backup is 3+ years old, not 3 days, not 3 months, but 3 years.... No reasons have been posted yet. It will be the same version as Ryan runs here, just the layout is different. tt
3 year old backup... that's pretty sad. Here's the 'most recent' archived version of the site: http://web.archive.org/web/20080430140845/http://www.metalmeet.com/
Sucks with a capital S. I had to rejoin which is no big deal but most of the archives I have been looking at are well after the 3.5 year cutoff
Hey Ian, TT was out of town that day. Here is what happened. The following was written on February 20, 2010 Last year the MetalMeet Board of Directors (BOD) decided to upgrade the web site forum software and make some other changes. After trying to contact the web host numerous times, the BOD finally decided that they needed to be more pro-active in the web site and started looking for another web host that would work with us. After finally contacting the web host last month, he was asked for his help to ensure a smooth transition on the transfer. About a week later, he announced to the membership that he was done as soon as his last post was posted, and someone else would be taking over as web host. This was a surprise to us and wasn’t true, because we hadn’t been supplied with the data that had been asked for. He had been paid for web hosting and maintenance for almost another month. There wasn’t a plan to take over his server, as we were going to create another server with the needed data. As this is being written, the MetalMeet web site is still on his server and hopefully the transfer will be made tomorrow to the new server. As has been speculated, there was never a transfer of data from the old host to the new host that caused the problem. While waiting for the data, vBulletin was purchased and set up on a different server. The new server had been ready to go but needed a copy of the database; which hadn’t been supplied from the old server. While trying to make a backup copy of the database a week ago off of the old web hosts server, the database file vanished and the forum went down. After several days, the old web host supplied a database backup; which wouldn’t load. It has taken almost a week to figure out why it wouldn’t load and this was with help from the vBulletin Systems Techs. It was determined last night that this backup database was made over three years ago, using an earlier version of vBulletin. According to the web host, this was the only backup that he made of our forum; which is surprising as it takes less than 30 minutes to backup a vBulletin database. Most web hosts backup their data regularly. This should give you some idea where we are now. Luckily, we were able to restore some of our data; which up until a couple of days ago appeared hopeless. The new web host should be commended for the job that he has done, for without him we would be starting over. Update - February 23, 2010 We still have not been provided a more current copy of the database from Jack McGee. The domain name MetalMeet.com was moved to the new server, from the server that was associated with JDN Designs and Joseph McGee or Jack McGee.
As I'm into webhosting myself aswell, these situations are all to recognizable unfortunatly. Moving away from one webhost often leaves 'sour grapes' there and it's will to cooperate with the move is entirely gone then. So always make sure your 'bags are packed' upfront before you break the news you're going to move. Rockable, The site Archive.org only saves somewhat of a snapshot of a website. Not the entire site, and especially not a forum, as one would need database access to be able to backup it completely.
