I was cleaning up after getting everything back together and found this part laying in a towel that I had my old transmission filter and pan sitting in. My 5 year old daughter was "helping" me and was messing with stuff from time to time. I thought I kept a good eye on her but found this part. The only thing I removed from my tranny was the governor, filter and pan. I inspected the governor right before I put it in so I don't think it came from that.

Any ideas? It's a TH400 transmission. I was working on some other front suspension parts too but I don't recognize this piece.

Looks like a sleeve for a rubber bushing.

Does look like a bushing sleeve for a shock or something. She's just trying to collect some parts for her future build.:D

If your running a deep pan, there is a spacer that goes over the bolt that holds the filter off the bottom of the pan. Kinda looks like that could be one.

The center bolt that holds the filter, some have a sleeve like that between the filter and valve body. I think the deeper pans do, I can't remember.

Cool, that makes sense (goes with the filter bolt).

The filter seemed to go on snug... Do I need to put this sleeve back in? Will it mess anything up without it?

Well, I'm guessing the logical thing would be the sleeve for the filter bolt. I hadn't put fluid in it yet so I'm gonna drop the pan back down and put it in for peace of mind.

    Thanks for the help!

It's for the filter. Deep pan (truck) transmissions use it. Goes between filter and valve body.

If he was working on some late model little engine, it might be a bellhousing alignment dowel, but the dowels on all the TH400 equipped engines were solid. Because the bolts are above and below the dowels, not in them.

Thanks guys, I got the spacer back on. It went to the filter bolt. I'm glad I noticed it when I was cleaning up though. My first thought was... Oh God did she crawl under there and pull something out!

I got it fixed now... Thanks all for the info. Now I know what an alignment dowel looks like too.

It's not a piece from inside a king pin set is it? Are there groves inside it and is it copper color inside?

  27. If it was, then we have a hell of a coincidence. According to post #22, he successfully reinstalled it in the transmission.

  28. I've seen hollow alignment pins, but not on anything that takes a TH400. I haven't seen everything though. It's been a few years since I had a 400, but I remeber that part on the filter.

  29. Glad you found where it goes.

I was really thinking that part looked like the inlet tube for a Kanooter Valve. I had one on a Huppmobile. Of course my car had the Quadraphonic system on it, so I`m not sure that the Kanooter Valve inlet tube would be the same . . .
