HELP! the carb on my 40 over 302 is way rich, (black smoke, poor mileage) and I've never tinkered with it. any ideas on jetting, etc to get it right? thanks.

    sometimes you're the dog...sometimes you're the hydrant.

  2. Ededbrock/AFB's are usually pretty close in stock form - has it been messed with or is there crap in the needle and seat assemblies making it flood? Check those first.

Good advice - plus you didn't give us NEAR enough info (CFM, model, car info, cam, intake, headers, trans, etc) to even make a stab at it.

  5. check the float level first

tuning an Edelbrock is easy IF you follow the instructions and have a calibration kit

Metering rod spring is too strong.

what size is the Edelbrock?? A 600 would be plenty of carb but a 500 would feed it alright too. They're very easy to set up just by reading the book but by your post you need to start by leaning it out so turn the adjuster on both sides to the right and to start leaning it or you may have to spent about 7 bucks to buy the step up spring kit .Again if you do that then read the section in the book for changing the springs and reset the carb again. Good luck and keep us posted

sorry I didn't include more info. it's a 1405 (600 cfm?) edelbrock performer manifold, 55 f100 pickup. had stock exhaust manifolds, but will go with headers after the rebuild. thanks for all the info, guys.

Install a fuel regulator, most Edelbrocks don't like more than 4-5 psi.

ding ding, we have winners right here folks... first things first, float level and is the inside clean. second what's the fuel pressure? and get a good regulator... then move on from there, more often than not these are the problems that will give you those issues right off the get go.

Yup, Zman is (still) spot-on. Edelbrock carb float levels do not hold during UPS or Fed Ex shipping, and the rest....

Or, check the psi your fuel pump is rated at. As stated, too much psi will make the carb run rich.
