STRAYKATKUSTOMS " Love mild Kustoms and I'm going to have to find more pics of Lomas 51. She looks timeless." STRAYKAT here is another shot of Roberts car at a morning cruise with Tom's roadster and my 5 window.

Anyone know when Johnny D put his name all over Frank DeRosa Jr's Candy Cad convert? It's a beautiful car and I'm amazed Jr. let it go.

No kidding. I talked with Jr about it at Santa Maria and I thought he had decided to keep it around for awhile. I guess money talks and BS walks. Thanks for the info

Thanks for sharing the pictures with us, I love dash swaps. I was also wondering if
that Pontiac side trim was flush mounted or frenched into the quarter panel. Your
pictures confirmed my questions, Wow that was a lot of work. I bet it looks kool in
    person.

Love packard tailights and I was going to put them on my Merc but talked myself out of
it. Glad that I did because it would n't have been as kool as the Caddy. Tell him that he
did a heck of a job on the Caddy. Like to see some pictures with the hood and trunk shut,
I'd like to see those kool lines.

Mild kustoms are overlooked and I love to see them. Lot more mild kustoms were running
around back in the day then a chopped Merc. Lot of guys assume it has to be chopped, whacked and tacked to be considered a kustom and that is just not true....... I've been studying "kustom stance" and I love to see one on the ground but the stance on the
51 is purrfect for the build. Doesn't have to lay frame to be kool. Thanks for posting the
    additional pictures.

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

I am talking about that car. Was just using the OP's designation.

I was wondering too. I was shocked to see the signs in the display.

K13 thanks for the other photos of the 51 Merc... they are great.

The car has intrigued me ever since I saw photos of it last weekend.
There is a lot of stuff going on on that car I would never do on my own... but somehow it works together. Somehow it makes me think of a Dave Bell illustration coming to live.
The top needs to be fixed. If an extra bar will not work for a folded top it should get a padded top. This one really ruins the lines of that car.

Here is the original design sketch Steve Stanford drew up for this car... a lot has changed since January 1999 when this was featured along with the How To by Bill Hines. (see how nice this top flows...)

I'm a hood guy myself, without it just takes away from the lines of the car. all though
I would rather the hood be missing then seeing it with the hood up all day. It should be
a law, unless you are checking the motor's fluids the hood should be shut at all times.
Looks like it to me that this is a work in progress and the Chevy will have a hood, the
project is to classy not to have one.....Can you imagine how much kooler that grill is
going to be with a hood.

Thanks for posting the additional pictures. This was the first time that I've seen the chevy.
all of the kustom touches look like they should have been made from the factory. Very kool
well thought out project and I can't wait to watch the progress...

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

the # 2 bow is missing or miss aligned on the top, I have seen so many cars throne to gether at the last minute to make shows. It,s one of my pet peves is , thay spend all year bulding cars send then to paint and upholstery last.I have actuly been putting final touches on cars while traylar is wating to take them to shows, more then once, when the show is over I fix what I can before next show, or the other thing i see is lots of money spent on bilding car,the engine ,paint, then it looks like thay ran out of money and/or time and they throw in cheep upholstery. this car is absolity beautiful and the only thing i see you compling about is the top, it is a easy fix and i'm glad to see thay stayed with real top and not carson

Krobe...go check the air in your tires or work on your Chevy or do something useful...quit trying to steer us a different direction...!!!

There's a new rule for YOUR rod runs Mick...no awards IF you own a Kustom and you're caught with the hood open the whole weekend...UNLESS you're checking fluids...!!!

You should googlee how a 49 Buick looks from tghe back.
I can see no BackUp lamp what you thougt it was a backup lamp is the reflection on the chrome bezel. That´s 49 Buick lights upside down!!

Isn't the Grey Caddie w/packard taillights beside Mcphail's Galaxie Bones Notebloom's wife's old car with just a repaint(used to be white/copperish)?

Thanks for posting that pic Rik.All I can say is this Merc is a winner.Stanford knows his shit.I wouldn't change a thing.Okay, the flames would need to go but even those have the perfect outline. The whole design flows like it should on a Custom and a Custom is about nothing but flow. This illustration and the final result are two completely different cars.Almost every area on the Stanford car is modified but not to make it look different,it was made to make it look better. For example, just look how neatly the front bumper is tucked in,absolutely perfect. This can be said about every inch on the car.I actually don't like bagged cars as 99% of all builders go the radical route and lay frame. The broken look. The Stanford car is bagged for sure but what makes the difference here is it still shows a bit of the rear whitewall.A MAJOR styling point when it comes to a good looking Custom. If you want to have a winner,a killer, show your whitewall.Too bad this creation hasn't become reality.

Thanks SledAddict, she looks a lot better then I thought she would with her top down...
    Ahhhhhhhh, Gotta love Kustom porn!

Kool Idea Roger, this may be our first rule, "all kustoms must have hoods, doors and trunks
shut." The funny thing would be to giveaway best motor in a sled and try to explain how
    we did that......

Bill Hines does a killer chopped rag top so something must have gone wrong right
before the show. He did a chop top for Butcher's '50 Ford ragtop that looks killer....

The "judges" must act inconspicuously...they must simply ask to see the engine while they are chatting nonchalantly with the Kustom owner...ya know: "Hey, BillyJoBobFrank said you'd chromed your alternator cover, can I see it?"

That way, understand, no one will be the wiser....
