You are correct! 1972 Nat Open.

Kenny Weld took the win with Opperman 2nd.

RABs32 and I were almost elbow to elbow that day, here are two shots I took before Ferkel"s engine let go, my shot of the fire is out of focus.

I believe these are from '73 Reading USAC show. Funny, in '73 I couldn't get a pit pass, the last sprint race I won I was lapping a 13 year old Logan Shuchart(spl.?), Bobby Allen's grandson. You will be hearing that name, he's gonna be a real good shoe.

Anyone know about the Bill Johnston Chevy 6 powered race car of the late 1940’s/early 1950’s? Or his driver Spec Frieden? The qualified 2nd fast at the Arlington Texas AAA race May 1, 1950.

There is a photo of the car in the reprinted 1954 California Bill’s Chevy, GMC, & Buick Speed Manual. The race results were found on-line. This was a "non-points" race staged to get footage for To Please a Lady. A sprint car race was held the day before at the same track. I found nothing on the driver or the car on-line but the Wayne Engineering car & Bill Johnston show up in an In-Liner club newsletter story on <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com[IMG]</st1:City>Wayne 12 port heads. That photo is of a different car, driver, and number. This 2 spring car doesn't look like it would be that tough to replicate. If the original is still around though I wouldn't confuse things by making another. In that case I'd simply stretch a Kurtis type midget & put a Chevy 6 & 3 speed tranny in it for vintage racing.

Don't know any details, but if you do a search on 'Wayne 12 port' here on the HAMB, you might find more info. Also be aware that Dan Warner (Harrys son) is a Hamber and may be able to get you more info.

    Rich(Rabs32),

    Those Reading shots are AWESOME!

Anyone know who was in the Gelhausen #4?? I guess he did not qualify.

How about the Red one either #15 or maybe #45??

That shot of Mel Cornett in the #98 OFFY is really neat.

A couple of years ago Mel died and his family needed photos of him. A friend of mine had taken a nice shot of Mel at WG in 73.The neg was all scratched up so I restored it in photoshop for them.

Also how about that model sprinter in the pits-that thing is a beauty-large scale.

Thanks for posting, RAB. I sure do miss the Fairgrounds USAC shows. I have to dig out the shots I took of Busson's Cedoz ride after the race. Karl took a nasty that day. Who was in the Raceweld car that day? I can't recall.

    Could that be Courtwright?

Looks like "Something" C. on the helmet

Rager drove it at the fall race according to OWT.
