Belly Tank Projects- Can I see yours?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Anchorboy46, Jan 4, 2010.

  1. I have a good chance at an 11 foot Belly tank that would make a damn good body for a Bonny Salt flat racer.
Thing is I dont want to get this and just have it hangin around my shop. I think with a Blown 4-71 283 Chev and an older 2 speed aluminum powerglide for a transmission, this could possibly be doable. My T roadstrs have a 10 foot wheelbase, so an 11 foot Belly tank isnt too small I would think...
How many of you have built a Belly tank lakester?
Do you gots any pix? Thanks in advance..Mikey

Even though the tank is 11' that doesnt mean you will get a 11' wheel base out of it. You have to take in account how much the tank narrows in both the front and rear. The tank I am building is 13'6" and my wheel base will be 105" - 108". I can garauntee you will have a real challange on your hands to fit everything you will need in the tank, but this is true with any lakester. How wide is the tank? Whats it made of, Alumnium - steel? Here are a few pics of the one I am building.

GET A RULE BOOK. 283Cube engine is in the middle of a class.260-304 is D class. Also a
11' tank will give a short wheelbase. You didn't say the Diameter you want the engine to fit in the body. you mighht want to think about a transmission with more gears.

From an early 1960s issue of Mechanix Illustrated. Never saw anyone use a belly tank like this before. By the way he apparently had an outboard in the tank that would tilt up when it was not in use.

  28. Hay Doc...your photo bucket seems to be empty!

Extending and tank is pretty simple. Find the fat spot, slice it in half, and add additional length as required to fit everything in. The additioal body panels do not have to be compound curves. Straight panels work just fine.

here is mine, it is a f84-e tank. it sounds like yours it is 11.5 ft long and about 3 ft in diameter. it was a challenge to get everything to fit in mine. there are some things missing in the pics but they are from almost two months ago
