48 F-1 steering wheel removal?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rusty1, Jan 30, 2010.

  1. What's the best way to remove a steering wheel from a 48 Ford F-1 steering column; there are no holes in the wheel for a puller, the part the nut threads onto is tubular so it's not real durable to hit on; what's the trick?
    thanks

  2. We use a "split bearing plate" and puller legs to do the job. Most parts stores have them or try some one who has a shop press as thats where we use them a lot.

Is there a brass ring in there to hold the horn button on. I just remove the bolt holding that ring on and use them.

  4. ...thanks for the quick replies; there's a cup that is also held on by the big nut,it holds the horn button on; no brass ring; I've got a bearing puller but don't know if it'll work, I'll check.
    anybody else have an idea?

back in the old days, we would grab the steering wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and shake it back and forth, then we would beat on it with our palms, shake it some more and beat it some more, use some w-d oil and don't take the nut all the way off, i have removed many steering wheels this way with no damage, it takes a little work and no damage, good luck
