We were looking at baby clothes in some womens garage, Just what I wanted to do on a Saturday morning right? Well then I spotted a chevy small block and crank..So I asked whats with the block? It's my husbands, he used to be into racing. Long story short I soon headed home to get my truck to load the block and crank up.. Turns out he was planing on building a motor for his chevelle but life got in the way so it sat. Thats where I come in. 80 bucks later I got a fresh block and reground crank. So my question to you guys is did I score a chevy 302 block? Thanks guy!!

agree..these are the numbers that count
on the pad infront of the passenger side cyl. head

  6. Or you can get the casting # off the crank.....I know they may not be a factory pair, but you never know!?!?!?!

I will look tonight. what numbers am I looking for on the front deck?
So it could be a 302 327 or 350..Cool Im happy either way. So let me ask:
Why is a 302 so desirable?

  9. Only if you are building a 67-69 Z-28. Otherwise, it's just a cool engine to claim ownership of.

well, if it's a 4bolt main block, it's going to be a 302 or 350. those casting numbers list 327 as a two bolt block.

the "302" block is only special for the number stamped on it. otherwise it's the same as any other good 350 block. 4" bore, large journal, 4 bolt main.

that block would only have been used in the later 302 with the large journal, not the earlier small journal block. I forget what year they changed, if it was 68 or 69 only that had the large journal 302

4 inch bore with a 3 inch stroke = a high winding smallblock...;)

And if it does turn out to be an OEM 302 stamped block, in your shoes I'd sell it to some anal Camaro restoration guy for beaucoup bucks, then you'd have plenty of cash to buy a lot more than just a block and crank. Unless the cool factor of the 302 is worth something to you.

    Whats the special number?
The crank is a standard 350 crank from summit racing..the guy said something about making a 337? or 338? sorry can't remember. With a 302 block and 350 crank?? Does that make sence? So you would need to get the revs up to make power right..

it's the "numbers matching" bs that the judges at shows look for.

that block had a 4" bore stock. with a 3.48" stroke 350 crank you will get

    tada! a 350! a 327 is 4" bore with 3.25 stroke, and a 302 is a 4" bore with a 3" stroke. sure he didn't say a 383?? which is a 400 crank in a 350?

Remember, if that block has been decked the numbers could be lost forever...

350 block + 400 crank = what? 383? or am I just getting old, heck like the other post said if its a 302 sell it and buy a complete crate big block he he he

  24. Check the casting date on the other side of the block; same location as the casting number.

Not a 383. Thats what I was thinking to. I ran the numbers on the crank its a 350 crank...so what is stupid money? What is a 302 block selling for to the z28 crowd?
If its a 350 still a good score for the ol' coupe.
I will take a picture of the front pad when I get home ..Thanks

  26. That will depend on the casting date, IF it turns out to be a DZ/302. '69 versions bring something less than a '68 because they made so many of them, but a '67 casting is the most desirable ......... for the Z gurus.

And BTW, ...... just because it isn't stamped DZ doesn't mean it's not a 302.

like miles said, if the front pad ends in "DZ" it's a 69 z28 engine.

otherwise, yes it's a good core block. Did you ask if he had the rest of it lying around too??:D

from what i've read, 67's were small journal 2 bolt main, 68's were large journal 2 bolt main and 69's were large journal 4 bolt mains. If this IS a 302, from what he's said it could only be a 69. Chances are MUCH higher that it was the stock engine out of his chevelle. the front pad will have a partial vin that will tell you what it came in.

    IF,and that's a big IF,it's a 302....
On the Front pad(front of block on pass side) it will be stamped MO for '67-'68 or DZ for '69 Z28 302.
