Us to. Looking for a deacent 55 Ply grill to tweek. Anybody out there have one for sale ? if so please PM me.
Well since we have no 55 ply grill to tweak yet but are still looking. We moved to the rear end of this 49 Merc. I wanted to do some thing different so this is what I have come up with so far. I started with a 51 buick front bumper and narrowed it in 5 places and dearced it at the same time to fit the profile of the Merc. It's not close to finish yet but you should get the idea of where I am going. I plan to run this packard overrider also. I have the packard bumper guards but are looking for some thing different.
Nice metal work.interesting how you did the side window opening.Care to share with us how you did it?
Everything is sooo nice. How will the 15" wheel covers fasten to the larger wheels? They look like they will be recessed a little so I'm guessing you aren't adding an outer trim ring to the cover(?)
Rick dude that rear bumper is the shit. How in the world do you come up with this stuff ????? Post more pics
Decided to add some reverse opening hood scoops while looking for a deacent 1955 Plymouth grill to tweak. Found a whole 4dr car locally for cheap but I only need the grill. Might have to buy it to get the grill and part the rest of it out real cheap
Well no luck with finding that 55 Plymouth grill I wanted. So I decided to play around with one of the 55 Desoto grills I had. I shortened it about 10" overall and increased the angle of the V about 15 degress more on the tooth part of the grill. Then I also took out about 20 degress on the parking light ends of the grill to make an very slight W shape when looking down on to the grill to match the hood and fender pofile of this 49 merc. I also made it look like a floater but with adjustments easly made to it up & down or in & out. I am Still looking for the 55 Plymouth grill or a deacent 54 Desoto grill
Thanks James for the good words. Planning on fabbing up some kustom head light trim inserts from stainless steel with no parking light to replace the stock 53 buicks. Some thing like this one.
This is why RICK ERICKSON is working on my Merc. There isn't a builder out there that has come out and opened up shop in the last 20 years that has anything on him. There's a lot of guys who spend a lot of $$$ to market themselves as great builders, but when you're this talented the cars do all the marketing for him.... Rick, show these guys the rest of Black Widow? (photo in this post) Folks, for those of you who havent seen it, have drool rags ready..
Great work, very inspiring thanks for sharing the process too. It really provides an insight to how much work is involved.
Finally got a deacent 1955 Plymouth grille I so wanted for this build. Of coarse I had to kustomize it a little. The orginal center part of the 55 ply grille was to flat and to thin for this mercs grille opening so I decided to rework a 51 Merc grille to replace the center section of the 55 ply grille. Well that tunded out to be a way bigger challange than I orginally thought but after some major tweaking here it is. I still need to finish the ends off with plans on using dummy spot lights turned around.
Work looks great!! That grill is going to look awsome in there. Now as for the spider web inserts in the headlights....... sorry but for me they add a very tacky feel to an incredibly cool build.
