Just got this old tool from my grandpa. Was told its some kinda valve tool. When you turn the crank, it twists back and forth. What the hell is it? Also, whats this other doo-hickey? That, and i need to clean out my mess in the shop
It's a valve laper, you would put some compound on the seat and that on the valve and give it a few twists, that would seat your valves. the one in the 4th pic is for removing the keepers on like a flathead six. I don't know what the spidery looking thing is.
Valves in the 1920's had a slot or two holes in the top that that tip would fit in, today a suction cup tiped tool will lap valve seats.
This one is for spreading disc pads (opening up the caliper), doesn't work very well in my experience. Not an old piece. Looks like KD tools or Lisle.
The one with the red handle is for valve springs on a flathead. put it between the block and spring and open it up to push the spring off the retainer to remove the keepers.
Re: "What is this old tool?" Hmm?? When I first read the subject line for this thread, I was worried that maybe someone had posted my picture and was asking about me! I'm pretty sure that what you've got there is a valve lapping tool that was part of a very rare 'dealer-only' service tool kit for working on the 'one year-only' '39 Henway 'Triple-H Power' triple-overhead cam straight 8. As far as the other do-hickey, no one ever figured out what that was for or why Henway included it in their dealer service tool kit! "What is this old tool", that's what you'll be asking when your 85 and getting up in the morning to use the john...
I belive you can still buy the valve lapper at sears. I also belive the pad spreader is not hamb friendly, besides, I had to step 1/2 a block back to see it, I felt like I was in the front row of the movie theatre. Back to the valves, If you ever see the old old, old motors with the large screw in inserts in the flat heads' That was for acess to the valves. Valve adjustments and lapping were common maintenance back in the old days. And if you ever see the pipes/ bowls with the shut off valves on em leading to each cylnder, those were to pour gas in to get each cylnder primed and ready to start!!!!!
looks like a hone to clean cylinders before pistons, the thing with a pump handle is a pump to pressure fluid into something, then close valve, a level guage?, fluid pressure brake lines??, we use em in the oilfield to pressure weight indicator instruments
Weeeeee....I didn't know that these have gone outta style!!!! Ha! The back and forth thingie is a valve lapper.....you steadily turn the crank instead of twisting a stick between your hands with a suction cup on the botton.... The valvelapper you were asking about has a shaft with a suction cup for the valve heads....and your 'other tool' is also a valve service tool........wow....
Ebb.....please don't hurt his feelings....I know its comin'....I can feel it in my bones............................, ya'll ain't gonna take him snipe hurting, are ya???????
