    JAHN as in Jahn's Pistons?

  2. Actually, the etymology of the element's name states differently.

In 1808 it was first referred to as Alumium. In 1812 it was referred to as "Aluminum". Later in 1812, someone proposed the addition of the second letter 'i'. Wikipedia offers more detail.

So, it appears that both are wrong. ;)

John North Willys, who started the company here in Toledo, accepted that everyone called the car a "Will-eez" even while his family has always pronounced THEIR name as "Willis".

In Vegas last summer my 7 year old asked what "chi-PAN-da-lees" (one word) was and why it was written on all the cabs....

  10. It is really most likely Egg-e (Almost Egg-a) but not quite. Eggy is easier and closer than anything else in English so it is so close why bother worryng.
My name is always mispronounced. Even when on Speed (Gearz)they murdered it and I even gave them the full phonetic way. I no longer worry and use the original german spelling instead as here because i know no one can pronounce it either.

  11. If coupe was pronouced Co-pay we would mostly all drive four doors. I needs an accent acute or something to get co- pay. Like coup'e or coupe' sort of.

Solenoid is pronounced sell-a-noid around here, but not apparently not everywhere. I still hear Hildebrand as opposed to Halibrand. Mostly from the Eldebrock guys though.

Eldebrock, get that one a lot around here. Hurst makes shifters, and a Hearse is what takes you to the cemetary, not interchangeable.

    Oh what the hell!

Lots of you guys seem to think "then" and "than" are interchangable. They're not and it drives me nuts.

"Then" refers to time like when something happened back then or every now and then.

"Than" is used when comparing stuff. Like "I'd rather be poked in the eye with a sharp stick than drive a Japanese car.

There, I've said it. Now I can relax and know that I've tried.

    For the ignorant:

What the hell does that mean?

"definitive" - means a clear definition
"pronunciation" - means how you say something
"Gotha" - was a speed equipment manufacturer long before you were born
you bloody know it all jackass.
