The El Camino "The Shy One" on page 792 is the late Sherman Cleveland who raced Dirt Track Speedway Super Modifeds in Australia and was killed in a Speedway crash in the US in what I believe was a Sprint Car. One hell of a dirt track Racer.

  4. "The Orange Crate" Very cool... Brings back a lot of memories, had to be ~ '63-64... Had a Povtin Blown Olds if I remember correctly (notice two holes in side of hood) and a flip up body. I even had the Revel Model of this car way back when.

    Thanks for posting this picture.

Back on pg. 776, NITROFC posted a high-res shot of Garlits at Massey Motors, and what at first glance appeared to simply be a killer grip-and-grin shot of Big Daddy, is upon closer scrutiny, quite revealing: the after effects of the '59 Chester and '61 Oldsmar fires are still very much in evidence, not only in terms of scar tissue, but also in how the stiff fingers of his right hand are near perfectly straight, with the tip of one even extending onto the jacket cuff of the dealer. His somewhat ill-at-ease expression could be as much from the awkward staged pose, as from the uncharacteristic garb. It's one heck of a document of that period.

Here is a pair that ran at my event in Phoenix. The orange one is a sbc 2-4s side by side. The white one is a 409. Nice cars both of them.

The pumpkin colored Henry J of Vail, Conkling and Shosie Bros. was 426 Hemi powered and ran mid 9's. The car was competetive on the UDRA gas coupe circuit

The Alabama based Sizemore and Holt " Golden Rod". Sizemore later chopped the top and altered the wheelbase for match racing.

I remember when one of the magazines back then did an article on this car. I found it an interesting attempt in experimenting with something different. Now, some 30 plus years later, I am able to see the car in various situation; car shows, the drags, etc

I think that this belonged to Don Hampton, funny car version of his earlier twin-Chev Fiat competition coupe...don't recall that it was very successful.
