'Little' George Amick- Wasn't on the national scene long but had several wins, including Langhorne, and many good finishes, including 2nd at Indy. Probably had big things ahead but, unfortunatly, will be most remembered as the first driver to be killed, in competition, at Daytona Speedway.

The problem that I have had with leaf springs especially light ones is that they are inconsistent. I ran light leafs on the rear then converted over to mono leaf rear suspension, before a third conversion to a three link. The springs would loose some rate every week, it was even quicker with the mono leaf. How glass leafs wear I can't say. I believe that Mike Duvall ran a transverse glass leaves on the front of the Flintstone Flyer dirt late model in the early 80's. I don't believe that the technology fared very well, as there weren't any glass leaves left in the middle 80's.

Doggett was a IMCA/BCRA driver in the central states back in the 50s/60s, so it's quite possible Denver's Jim Beckley may have owned it at some point. A little before my time here, so I really don't know. If MitchG doesn't chime in, give him a PM, he may know more.

 

Yes. Looking for more pics of the car more than anything... The Rear Torsion mount/protection tube is the main give away. It stayed with the car for ever.

 

You might check autoracingmemories.com. All kinds of Colorado stuff on there, and MitchG is almost always there.

 

vintageracer37 (Sean Hillis) could nail that down for you pretty quickly. He's still in the thick of the vintage scene in Denver, and probably talks to Beckley on a regular basis. According to Bill Hills book "Decades of Daring, Midget racing in the Rocky Mountains" it states in Jim Beckley's bio that he won four main event's in open competition sprint races in Colorado at the defunct Century 21 Speedway, in a rebuilt Curly Doggett car. This would have been in the very early 1970's.

 

YES! I just got off the phone with Mr. Beckley and he said the same thing. And yes, that is the car. Now I just need more pics of it when Curly Dogget had it, and anyone that knows Curly or his kids (if he had any)

On the other hand, it looks like he was running coil-overs, so is the torsion bar still there?

about 5 years ago a guy had it up at winchester for the oldtimers weekend. he lived near winchester and found the car in a field. did a good job with the car but had pavement and dirt parts on it. nerfs were different and a few other things. i heard he may have sold it. hope sham put it to original. my gran and paul leffler were good friends. she had the car built in the spring of 1975. the car "never" ran pavement until greg leffler rebuilt the car to run usac. he won at sandusky in 1978 usac show.

I knew Calvin and his son, Gary, when I was editor of a weekly paper in Salem in the late 60s. Gary's future wife, Janet, worked with me at the paper. I used to get all the info every Monday on how he did. I also remember him driving a car for Leo McCoskey of Salem at Bloomington back in those days.
