sectioned, not chopped 54 chevys.

I've been looking everywhere lately to find unchopped, but sectioned 54 bel-airs. i've had no real luck or 50's to 53's wuold due too. im curious as to see what the car looks like proportion wise. if anybody has any pics or opinions please help me out. im a youngin' trying to think outside the box. thanks ahead of time.

 

I think there's a reason why you can't find them, There are very few cars that look good sectioned and not chopped.

 

I second that. If you sectioned a unchopped 54 that would look odd as hell....

 

find yourself a pic of a stock 54 and post it up on the photoshop thread along with what you would like to see and they will get you close. You could see how cool or silly that would look

 

Wuuups, wrong picture but you get the idea

 

1. Find a good side view photo of a 54.

2. Hit print.

3. Get the scissors out.

4. Start cutting.

I think you could pull it off and make it look good if you sectioned the body a conservative (You won't see me type that word often) 2"-3" and sectioned the roof ABOVE the windows an 1"-1 1/2" to flatten it out like what became more stylish on late
50's and '60's cars, same glass, but less roof in the profile.
metalshapes did one that way a while back and posted how to pics. It's been a while but they might still be up.

 

I think there is potential, if you don't go overboard.

looking at how the trim lines up id guess 2 inches? no more than 3.

I think the roof would need to be shortened too. Compare some pictures of sectioned shoebox coupes vs. tudors, and I think you'll find that the proportions of the coupes are much more pleasing.

 

Sectioned '53-'54 Chevy's are amazing as long as they are done with restraint. A friend of mine is building one that he hard topped and sectioned and it just looks amazing.

 

restraint is key. its easy to just go nuts and end up with a ridiculous looking pancake.

im curious to see who can pull off a nicely sectioned and chopped car that still looks good at ride height. they all seem to look best dumped, but when lifted to drive, things get kinda wierd.

 

That one I was talking about is actually chopped 1" I think. It looks so tasty and well thought out.....I am just sad the car is getting 22" wheels I think.

 

Proportions.. Big roof- body too small. Chopped too much- body too big. Proportions

 

yeah im rather perplexed that someone who excercizes enough restraint to only chop a car 1 inch would set a mid 50's style car on 22's...? but i would really love to see this car regardless.

 

I'm probably in the minority and I know its not a 54 Chevy but I always liked 49-50 Ford coupes sectioned and having a 39 Willys sedan with a chopped top, its nicer being able to drive it without being hunched over.

I think the '49-'52 Chevy body would look better sectioned than a '53-'54...think of the Polynesian Olds. That has a nice balance...or maybe a mild section might work on a '53-'54...like 2" or so...for that European/sporty look...

 

Valley Custom got quite famous for sectioned, unchopped cars...

 

Yep, they were known for sectioning and they also knew when to quit...they built some beautiful customs for sure.

 

There was a red 54 out of I think Ohio that was featured in Southern Rodder back in 99. I'll see if i can find the pic.
