I need an engine for my 57 Bel Air. I have a chance to get this one. The guy says he was told it was a 235 from a 58 Pickup. I always though that only the older 235's and 216's had the 2 bolt valve covers. Can anyone suggest a good site that has ID #'s for engines? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

it's a 235, we can tell because the side cover is "short". The numbers cast on the side of the block on the bottom, behind the distributor, are the casting date code for the block. The numbers stamped on the surface just below the distributor tell what model it's from, etc.

The water pump says 55 or later, since it is in the block, and does not stick up in front of the head. although it's been modified to fit into an early car

Thanks, do you know what kind of modifications would need to be done to my car if any?

Should bolt right in. See if the oil pan looks the same as the one in the car.

you're welcome. if you want to figure out what it is, tell us all the numbers...everything you can find, including what's on the top of the head (under the valve cover too)

btw it's easy to put a 2 bolt cover on a 4 bolt head, just add longer rocker studs

    looks like a 58 235 block, G 10 8 means the block was cast July 10 58, The head is a 54-55 235.

is the number stamped near the base of the distributor F711J? if so it's a normal pickup truck engine.
