Correct Rocky, that would be Armen and Leon on the right.

What a collection! I love looking at these.

These are the pics of my dads strip days. I dont have many as I was only around 5 or 6 years of age. But he used to take me to all kinds of racing events. The drags being my favorite!

  10. Don't know how true this story is but I remember hearing about The Service Center in Gardena? California drive their Ford LTD Funny, Peanuts, around the block and getting pulled over by the Police and getting written up. Probably a Advertising stunt???

Anyone else remember this or is it just Old Timers Disease setting in?

  11. I am pretty sure that was a cover shot of Pop Hot rodding or a featured pic anyway.

pretty cool and funny at the same time.

There must be lots of unheard stories like that. I watched Neil Mahr make a pass up Broad Street (PA Rt. 501) in Lititz PA from Hartman Auto, rowing the 5 speed in his B/SR, then turned around and blasted back, all the while plenty of traffic going past in the middle of the day.

The blown Willy's was a good looking car that a B&W shot doesnt do justice to. It featured a really intricate lace paint job. When still, it sat low to the ground. I believe famed Dragtoons cartonist Pete Millar was the original owner. And the blown 32 Highboy of the Thurmond Bros was all stell, frame and all. Simple deep hued fire engine red gave the girthy thing a classic hot rod look

Owner Larry Fullerton later was joined in parternership by a guy whose last name was Dohenney; he was aire to the Dohenney Drive real estate fortune. He $ funded the car to new heights, but dropped out after 1972 or so when the touring became to hectic.

The twin flathead powered rail is owned by the Mancillias Bros, a local group of guys who are active in the drive in hot rod scene. In speaking to one of them he said the rail made but one aborted pass at OCIR in 1971. It pulled to the line, blew the flywheel and never ventured to the track again. It remains intact to this day, resting in garage. The twin Pontiac powered four banger shot from a above was the product of Ringer and Souder, a pair of Oregon firefighters. They flogged this thing for a couple of years before getting it to work. It evntually was a national record holder and regional points champ.
