  1. WOW The chevwagen is still around???

  2. ardyboy;
    I expect as speeds went up,that the chutes took to much air, and likely caused a few accidents.
    Looks like a good way of getting whip lash to me..

    This Split Window Vette belonged to my Step Father, it was bone stock at the time. Ault and James purchased the car around 1967 and it quickly became a record holder in the Southern Ohio area. I am looking for some of our old pictures to post along with this after shot. I believe they still have this car in their speed shop in Dayton, Ohio

    Appears to be a 60-63 European model imported to the states. Note lack of overriders on bumpers. 63 was the last year for the factory "ragtop".

    I bet that car was run by Wes Rydell of "$3m Foose built "Grand Master" Riddler award winning 35 Chevrolet" fame!
    It was at least sponsored by his familys chevy dealership in Grand Forks ND!!

    Here's one of my favorite pictures of the Odd Couple twin. Big top end charge with the chutes out. Don't remember where I got the pic, possibly from here many pages back.

    The history of the drag chute thing is kind of intriguing. Yes, orginally they relied on surplus military chutes. But they failed in two area; One, they took a while to fully blossom, and when they did they opened with such force they often times damaged the cars. Jim Deist learned of how to develop a ring slot that opened quickly, but softly. Bill Carter and Bill Simpson introduced the cross from. These open even quicker, didnt tangle up and were softer in deaccerlerating the car. There was a model offered by Tri-Form. Basically 3 panels, similar to what is offered today. They were really easy to pack, basically like loading up your laundry bag, no formal step by step like a ring slot

    I think that photo was taken in England of the 1964 US drag team tour.

    The very first pass down Woodburn, OR drag strip June 1961. The coupe is a friend, Don Stafney and the roadster is Dick Martin.

    Is it my imagination or is this a staged shot? Looks like he's yanking the fronts while in the dirt on the side of the track. :confused:

    Does look faked. The slicks aren't wrinkled right for one more clue. It is the only Cobra wheelie photo I've ever seen.
