is a 1954 241 Red Ram hemi worth building? i know of one with a 3 duece set up on it, it needs a rebuild but is it worth it? what should i pay for it? what performance parts if any are avalible? what could i get out of it at what cost?
I obtain a 241.6 Red Ram back in the late 80's, with car for 500 bucks. This was a old moon shine 41 Plymouth 4 door down by Ft Knox, KY. At the time, I pulled the heads and had a valve job done, but could not find any valves (new), so I put it back together with used parts. Ran real good for a big car, but the orginal trans, with no park, was the weak link. Hemis are nice to look at but are expensive to work on. Figure what the intake is worth and offer that amount.
It is a very very good motor. If it is treated right it will last forever. The only problem will be you will be seeing a decrease in your kids college funds.
kids are no problem as i am 19 and dont plan on haveing kids for a while lol what is that intake worth? i have no idea?
You build it for looks, not power. At 241 CI it's not going to set the world on fire, but for a casually driven street car it's fine.

i rebuild mine completly. bored 30 over and a high lift cam is all i did to it. i spent around three grand (had some family hook up at the machine shop though) you can find alot of the parts at egge
the car i want to put it in is my daily driver 1976 dodge charger so i dont want something to big and i want a hemi in it out of personal prefrence the 241 should handel the 1976 charger pretty well right? and i dont know what the guy is asking yet as i am waiting for him to get back to me
Seriously? Get a 318. Anyone your trying to impress with a Hemi in a Charger will immediately know its not a 426. Leave the 241 for a hot rod not a muscle car. Jeff........FWIW I could get a non running 241 Hemi for 600.00, a guy at work has one.
I have to agree, with that year of car you might as well stick with a small block 318/360 or a 400 big block. It will take an adapter to mate the 241 to a usable tranny. Then you will have to work out the motor mounts. Small block or big block would be easier and give you far more benefits minus the hemi valve covers.

Get a Dodge A833 trans and you are set to go. Only problem with the 241/270 is the front motor mount. Buy the motor.
Buy it, bring it & your charger over... I will put a nice 468BBC/T400 in your Charger and you can watch me put the 241 into a 50 Coronet Convertible...

update: ok so in my travels i have found two erly hemis first the 325 its a short block that was never used he said he found it in the 80's in a old factory its complet less heads and intake its basicly brand new the casting date is 1958, the 241 red ram is complet (intake to pan) but it needs rebuilding as it is used casting date 1954 and also included is a new tri power intake setup with carbs now for the price the guy wants 1500.00 canadian (about 1300.00 US) is it worth it? i think it is but i just want some input? also what tranys will bolt up to them?
Sounds like a deal to me; the 325 needs to be checked out though as it could have come as poly or hemi, pistons are different. I've seen multi-carb intakes alone bring $200.
You guys are killin' me, having a little fun with a "baby" Hemi." But, yeah, I'm with RustyNewYorker. Dodge could have had more displacement, but the heirarchy at Chrysler dictated that DeSoto engineers couldn't upstage the parent line, AND Dodge couldn't upstage DeSoto (Plymouth didn't even get to design a Hemi). But, heck, they sure as hell ran better than the Dodge flatties, and they look great in a rod -- 'cause they are Hemis. You wouldn't be embarrassed by power, just not blown away. Stock, we're just talking -- what? -- 145 at best, guys? If you can get it reasonably and it doesn't have multiple, obvious problems, you can probably MAKE money on it, even if you don't use it yourself. But, you might be surprised. A lot of people do a complete rebuild before finding out if the engine runs, runs smoothly and doesn't smoke. Takes some patience, but beats the shit out of laying out somewhere around $5 grand. But BUY it, heck yeah, if you don't have pay a mint, go for it.
Hell yeah it is worth building. The intake is worth $350 at least, the carbs if 97's or 48's are worth at least $125 each for cores and who knows what is inside the hemi.
