My buddy removed the front end off of his 53 chevy and clipped it. He said I can have it if I want it. I just dont know if there is anything it would be usefull for. I remember reading somewhere on here that it was a good swap for something but I dont remember what. Should I pick it up or let him scrap it?

It works excellent on the front of a 53 Chevy.

LOL, yeah. I dunno about putting it on something else but the bits would always be good to have around. (If they are any good) Drums, adjusters etc.

a few weeks ago I read something about the spindles or something being worthwhile for something, and I thought to myself hey its too bad he scrapped that, I could use those. Then I found out today he didnt scrap and I couldnt remember why I wanted it in the first place. I think I have to many open cans of lacquer thinner in my garage or something.

yeah, it's good for nothing at all, scrap it. We wouldn't be replacing them if otherwise.

The whole crossmember assembly bolts into any 49 to 54 Chevy passenger car OR 53 to 62 Corvette. I had a 56 Corvette once that the suspension shaft siezed and it ate a hole in the crossmember. I used the entire front suspension and crossmember from a 54 Chevy in it. Worked good except that the front end sat a little high and it rode a little stiff because the 54 Chev springs were a little stiff for the much lighter Corvette.

49-54 spindles are used on straight axles.

there is someone on ebay looking for every part on that front end. back before ebay started to suck I'd get 2-300 bucks selling each good part individually, I'm sure you could knock that down 25% at least with the new "improved" ebay.

I even sold the used bearings. these cars are very popular these days.

anyone who scraps 49-54 parts is tossing money out the window.

Charlie beat me to it. Same as Corvette through '62.

According to Hollanders Interchange, the same front end used 49-54 Chev passenger and '53-62 Corvette. Same spindles, upper and lower control arms.

A note in Hollanders also says if part of the suspension is damaged, easier to replace the whole front end (as Charlie did) than try to repair it.

Some dropped tube axles are offered configured for 53-54 Chevy spindles and brakes. It's how I put a T roadster together a long time ago.

... trucks of the same era can use the brakes/hubs to get 5 lugs the easy way.

Some of the earlier Chev owners would probably like to have the Bendix brakes off of it, to replace their Huck brakes.

  17. Yes, the backing plates, hubs and drums bolt onto 49-50 and possibly older Chevy front ends, replacing Huck brakes, and on the 48 and back giving you 5 lugs up front.

Spindles have a lot of potential uses, too.

  18. put those spindles on a 49-52 chevy and it will drop 2".

Hey guy's I hear it will drop a pre 53 by an inch and pre "huck" brakes are sure as heck easier to live with. Sound's like a good swap for a "gent" on the market.

Like some others said the 53/54 uprights were about 1/2 inch higher lowering it about 1/2 inch. not much, but its simple enough. either way, if the pieces are good, then its worth money. For the love, don't scrap the damn thing, hell put the parts up in the classifieds.
