Wife wants to go to AZ to the grand canyon. Thought about hopping in the 49 and going there a year from now. Thinking about running Rt66 from middle of missouri out there and back.

Doing my homework now. Yea yea i got all the books but where are the cool places to stop and stay along the way??

    Thanks

  2. Along the way on I-40, you will see old frontage roads aka parts of the old 66. Lots of little towns along the way you can get off and drive through because their main drags were once part of 66. When you get to Tucumcari, New Mexico it is a town of gas stations and motels. Cruise it end to end and there are still alot of old/vacant buildings standing. The newer stuff is at the East end of town and the South end out by I-40. Next, in Albuquerque exit 167 will take you through there on the old 66 - lots of old buildings - it will drop you out again on I-40 at mile marker 149. HAVE FUN!

"Big Texan" steak house in Amarillo is neat. If you're there "in season" there's a neat "outdoor musical drama" in Palo Duro Canyon if you like that kind of thing.

And don't forget the "Cadillac Ranch" on the west side of town.

  4. :D YES! The deal there is if you can eat the complete 72 ounce  - yes 72 ounce steak dinner in 1 hour - the meal is free! 1-800-657-7177 & website is www.bigtexan.com I-40 East exit 74

Shamrock Texas, and Tucumcari specifically the Blue Swallow at night. There is a car museum in Santa Rosa NM, also Old Town in Albuquerque.

  12. last year the wife and I stopped at Kingman and went to the museum there. Great place, lots of 66 stuff and history of the highway as well as local history.

Halltown, MO has an old gas station done up like original and down the road is Spencer, MO where the longest stretch of original pavement is. An an old store someone is starting to restore.

Gotta go thru Seligman, AZ (between Kingman and Flagstaff) & visit the Snowcap Drive In. Mr. Delgadillo passed away a couple of years back, but I am sure his sons are still running the place. The whole town is like a time capsule. We used to stop there every year on the way to (or back) from the West Coast Kustoms Show in Paso. Haven't been there since 2004, but definitely a Kool place, not to be missed.

  16. take a detour when you get into Flagstaff and drive into the canyon to Sedona. it is a real nice scenic drive and Sedona has some nice places for lunch.

I think he is stating that there really isn't a bad place to stop on the route. So my question to you: Are YOU drunk in Nebraska or just an ass?

Was out there in July between Oatman and Seligman. Museum in Kingman is just "okay".

Seligman is where it's at, and it is about the coolest place that is close to the Canyon. Of all the places I stopped and checked it, it was by far the most "Route 66 feeling" place along the road. Angel Delgadillo owns the barber shop, and his nephew runs his brother's drive in next door. I guess their dad had a pool hall there way back before WW2. SUPER cool people there in town. I planned on spending an hour or two and ended up staying the day and one night. Hotel was nicer inside than the room I had in Vegas for my conference (business trip) and less than 1/2 the price.

Barber shop, "Sundries", and Road Kill Cafe are all must sees. It is a small town, but there were at least 10 old garages, 2 motor courts, and lots of neat people to talk to. The Sundries place has new owners, but looks just like it must've in the 50's on the inside.

In case you couldn't tell I had a great time there, and although all of my trip was cool, Seligman was by far the best time spent.

What, Rt. 66 doesn't exist anywhere but Arizona? Going into Tulsa, stop for lunch at MoJo's in Catoosa. dog leg down 193rd east Ave, (county line rd, same exit as the obscene indian casino) and hang a right on 11th street, the original Rt. 66. Yes, you end up going through town, but lots of cool art deco buildings still along that road.
I'd also make a short side trip to Palo Duro Canyon at Amarillo, the second largest canyon in the U.S., and pretty neat.

New Mexico has been pretty good about posting "Historic Highway" signs pointing you to the old sections, but there are a lot of sections of "Pre-1937" Route 66 that run around Albuquerque. I have no idea what's up with them, they're nice enough roads but I'm skeptical they aren't just to trap tourists.

I have driven to Chicago from Albuq. a couple of times, trying to follow the old route. I've found it a better trip to follow some of the other old US routes, like US 56. Very well maintained, lots of thriving small towns along them, all the character you're looking for.

Lots of good places on Route 66...The Blue Swallow in Tucumcari NM (stayed there, clean and really cool, the car museum in Santa rosa is woth the $5.00 admission, Seligman Az is a blast, Oatman...Do a google of Route 66 for each state and you will find an abundance of info, maps, and even turn by turn directions through different areas.... A lot of good stuff to see in Missouri, all of the states. There are Route 66 Associations in each state as well that can give you the best of the best to see and do....
I've done most of the trip, in sections, but always have had a great time doing it....
