Lowriders

  1. AGREED! The situation with Ryan, and I know from a prior disagreement, he's young, and hasn't "lived" this thing of ours. So, he tends to rely way too much on what he reads, sometimes ignoring the fact that some of us were THERE. ;)
BTW, that blue 64's beautiful! Looks like those old Appliance wheels on it

great thread, I don't know why some people don't consider them traditional, they've been around long enough, some beautiful cars, and incredible craftsmanship . not my style of build but i really enjoy seeing one out cruising. These guys put their hearts and souls into a lot of these cars. Often in the Latina community, the entire family , all generations, is involved in the build, and the upkeep of the cars. having your entire family involved in working on a car together is a great thing for the car hobby in general.

  4. It's pretty damn cool to go to a Lowrider show, and see 3 generations of every ethnic group sharing a common love. Black/brown/white/parents/kids/grandparents, all at the same show, all with the same interest. I'm not certain you'll see that in other genres(sp) of this hobby.

Yeah Ryan he hasn't lived it.. but neither have I, I'm only 25.. haha.. but I did grow up in East Salinas where lowriders were king.. more mini trucks and late 70's GM cars around when I was growing up, but there were still a lot of old school lowriders in my neighborhood... that lived it including my dad who used to tell me stories about cruising Alisal in his 64 Impala before it got stolen... Wish I coulda been around those days..

Those are old Appliances... a really clean set too.

I'll scan in some of the old lowrider pics I have from the Salinas area.

No but at the time it was actually Cheech's car and the quarter windows said "La Bamba." They wanted to change it for the movie, so he pulled the windows out and swapped them for the ones they put "Love Machine" on. He rotated them back out after the movie.

I love how he takes forever to get it dusted off and started and then just makes a u-turn and parks across the street.

Some of us don't know the story of the demise of the original Gypsy Rose 63,
    so please, do tell!

  14. groucho! you should do it man! walt still here!

  15. Rumor/fact has it that the 63 was ruined from some "gang" activity back it the day (my day). And the 64 was built with a LOT more excess in the paint scheme, thinking more is better......................
I remember going to Walt's back then, and seeing the hood from the 63 leaning against his shop wall for inspriration for the paint on the 64

An old friend told me that it was destroyed in a La habra California barrio after the owner ran out of gas or broke down.

    Hemi...nice job!!! :)

Groucho, Dude thats crazy...i cant imagine seeing that.......I also love the taillight treatment on the 63 version...Such a nice touch i think...When i had my 63 i wanted to clone that car sooooo bad and that was the 1st thing i got was the dodge tailights and wheels...even tho i got Rockets instead cause i like the spoke better. But my plans right now are for something similar and will def. be paying tribute too!

I grew up in the Central Valley within a huge Lowrider scene. Matter of fact I have about six of the original local Lowrider wooden bucks for their plaques from the early seventies.

That's what I remember watching when I was younger. That's why I loved Gypsy Rose, and never realized there had been one before!
