The same reason alot of things are dissappearing. Too many people. Urban sprawl. They have been replaced by sub-divisions, malls etc. I am lucky to have been around when drive-ins were still around. Was a great place to drink when we were in h.s. In Wichita, KS there was a double drive in called the Twin and the Meadowlark. Long gone. Replaced by a bunch of crap. The first mall there replaced an amusement park. Heard that Wichita's drag strip is history now. Suppose 81 Speedway is next!

I've been to the one in Ennis a few times: overall good- no bugs (think mosquitoes), litter free and good concession prices despite too many rude people that do not seem to belong.

My mother was young whenever she worked at the drive in off of Bruton Rd. in Mesquite? Balch Springs area. She was working till the tornado blew in down. Kinda like the movie Twister.

I remember driving past an old Astro in Oak Cliff several times and seeing the old sign as recently as 5-6 years ago. So sad.

I've been told the remains of one off of 175 near Kleberg are long gone. Closed down after people complained of pornos able to be viewed from the highway. Maybe urban legend?

  3. Well Samsam, mayby us n.w. hambers aught to do a drive-in cruise some time next summer at the Auburn 6.
The old "Starlite Drive-in" in south Tacoma is now just one big swap meet. Although, most of the equipment is still in place to show a flick. Just one more thing for my "When I win the lottery" list.

I cant wait for that show this saturday. The Twin High-Way Drive in is about 15 min from my house. i usually go the Dependable drive in (10 min from my house) every sunday night with i group of friends. we throw couches in the back of our trucks and usually a couple of cases of beer. Going to the drive in beats going to a normal movie theater any day.

Hey, I just drove past "The Spud" Drive-In about a week ago when I was on my way to Yellowstone. Had to pull over and take a couple of pics. Cool little place!

We just closed our drive-in theatre down for the season. We'll reopen in the spring of 2010. We show current double features, & have a fairly large menu in our Moon Car-feteria. I would like to do a car cruise somtime. It's hard to get 35mm archive prints of older films, however. A local mopar club has contacted me.

The drive-in is on US RT. 220 near Williamsport, PA. It's a fun way to "spend" our retirerment years.

Tons of good times spent at drive-in movies, both as a kid with the whole family, then as a teen & adult. I even WORKED at a drive-in. What was special? It was like going to a park, only they showed movies, and the popcorn tasted even better, somehow, with all the fresh air.

Lots of reasons so many drive-ins faded away, but I think the main ones were property value, burgeoning entertainment options, and concerns over drug use & violence made security a real concern where it was not a couple of decades ago.

About the only remaining drive-in hereabouts also runs flea markets Wednesdays and weekends, helping keep them in the black.

There is a reel nice drive-in in Lancaster Ohio, south of Columbus, called the Skyview Cruise-in. It is clean, safe, & familly oreinted. It is always packed. We visited it a few years back. The owners, Walt & Cathy Effenger, gave us a tour of the projection booth, & the VIP treatment! ..They still have in car speakers & FM radio sound.

People allways want to control everything they do. So they came out with VCRs so you could watch whatever you wanted ,when you wanted.Only problem is,everyone else is doing the same in their own lonely places. Another loss to progress.

I can recall a really cool event being held at a drive in for a couple years and not that many people showing up. Perhaps that's why they are closing.

KanKustom & WVEnfield, THOSE are great observations on how our U.S. society has evolved -- serious. Seems every time technology presents a POSITIVE opportunity, something gets lost in the process.

The one in my home town has been open since 1948... originally as the El Rio Drive-In Theater.

I remember seeing Easy Rider, Little Fass & Big Halsey, American Grafitti, and W.W. and the Dixie Dance Kings there when I was a kid.

The comeback has been going for about 10 years. There's been many new builds and old ones reopening. I'd like to keep it going for many more years. Everyone go find your closest drive-in: http://www.drive-ins.com/database.htm#srchzp

Go there often, don't bring your own food, spend lots of dough in their snack bar (they make very little profit from ticket sales). Tell all your friends. This is the only way the few survivors will keep going.

We lost two (of 10 survivors) here in Michigan recently, but I just heard about an old one in Metro Detroit may be getting reopened. This one dodged a bullet and is rocking once again............

I own Crazy Bob's Harvest Moon Drive-In Theatre, on US RT. 220 (I-180) between Williamsport, & Jersey Shore, PA. On Sept 4th, 2011 we're showing American Graffiti (Ron Howard, Harrison Ford 1973), Two Lane Blacktop (James Taylor, Warren Oats 1971), Viva Knieval (Evil Knieval & an all star cast 1977), & Cleopatra Jones (blaxploitation starring Tamara Dobson 1973). http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=115532578531680

Los Angeles area has a few left but all are in the "Inland Empire"...

    Mission Tiki Drive-in

The Tiki is the coolest one of the 5 east of the 605 Fwy in the San Bernadino & Riverside area. They have a link to the Rubidoux 39cent mentioned. There are 3 or 4 others linked on the Tiki website. As for buy food at the drive-in, the Tiki has a great menu. They have a fat burrito for $5; that's the same as any taco stand, Churro's and the like. It's not your crappy 70's menu okay. The only thing I bring is my own water. I do go early & buy sodas & dinner at the snack bar. Sometimes we stop and get Chinese at the freeway off ramp, but we get most our food at the snack bar.

There is a drive-in near the 605 and Valley Blvd called the Vineland. The last drive-in in Los Anglels County. It's not as nice, but it's closer to L.A. if your coming from the west side.

    Vineland Drive-in

All of them have swap meets which is another part of the SoCal car culture... sort of... in a way... :p Don't forget to sign up for the email's, that way you get a reminfer each week to get off your tookus and go to the drive-in LOL
