Projects Final chapter in the crummy chop

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Thommyknocker, Aug 20, 2009.

  1. There is a '52 4door in the yard.

Chev's of the 40s shows the back glass is the same, 49 to 52.
I'll bring by garnish molding out and verify the size is the same.

even if the sail panels arn't quite large enough, it would save me quite a bit of work.
Gota figure out a plan to get it.

  2. Oh YEA!
Nice productive morning, My buddy Mark and I went to our local pull a part with a generator and saws-alls.

$32 bucks later and I'm a happy man
    Now the work begins

  3. First test fit.
    I'm thinking:
The bottom of the window needs to drop a little more.
The window needs to tip forward a bit more.

I put a new roof on mine as well, the first chop was such a mess that the previous owner lopped the roof off and ditched it. I found a good 52 roof and door tops and started over.

  6. Mang.
There are some awsome chevys out there being built right now!

It's starting to look like something now.

I've got an extra trunk so I'm going to pancake this one. That will let me get the catwalk and the trunk to flow together.

    Now your talking!

  8. Thanks Flatty,

I snuck a little play time in this afternoon.
This is 3" vertical (overlap for now) on the back of the trunk.
I tried 4 but I looked to far.

  9. The tushy tuck is coming along nicely so far.
A few tacks to start with, I'll do the center strip next then the front piece.

Looks like it will line up ok with the roof, might need to lower it a bit more and bend that piece below the belt line.

    Yeah that's it.
What made you dice it up instead of just cutting out around the outside of the boot? Any problems with the fitment?
    Cheers

  13. Do you mean cutting a pie section out and squishing it down like Flop did?

Well, Flop said he had a bunch of trouble getting it to fit again after doing that.
I figured that's because the inner structure is stiff enough to cause the outside lips to warp when the center is forced down. (I started off by trimming up the inner structure with pie cuts to get it to move. I eventually cut it complete out cause it wouldn't move far enough easily)

I've seen a few other pictures where they did it this way. Cutting the center out, repositioning it, and weld it back up.
It seemed like the better way to me.

nice work seems alot easier doing it the way you are doing it . ohh and is that your tool box in the back of the pic with all the brightly colored handles hahahahah

sorry im goin completley crazy with this broken hand

  15. Thanks Flop for chiming in, I'm a little worried about puting the inner structure back in, can't do it without opening the trunk LOL
Should be able to get it close enough though.

Those are my fire supression system/child chasers/ kittiecat drenchers :D

i tacked mine from the inside(me in the trunk ) to get it mostly secure still havent finished the rest yet

  17. LOL I bet that was fun
Dang, I'd never get in there, all my air ride stuff is over the rear axle.

  18. Nice productive few days.
Got the trunk all pached up.
That center strip down the middle sunk on me a little (bout 3/16")

I stacked some 2x4s under there and with the weight of the trunk on the end of a stud, I stiched it up around it.
Repeat a few times and I'm only 1/16" low in a few spots.

When I have it stiched up more, would I be doing hammer on dolly from the inside to bring that up a it more?

I'm still at work in NoDak, so I'll holler at you when I get home.

  24. Looking forward to it.

As you can see in this pic, I wasted my weekend welding the trunk up LOL
It's not to shabby, I've got an oil can right in the middle I gota work on, but the shape is there.

I'd like a bit of advice on how to proceed with the roof.
Namely where they overlap, it's about 1/4" sunk all along that seam.
Illistrated by the gap under my ruler.

How would one go about bringing BOTH pieces "up"?
Would a few pie cuts on both pieces let me do that?
    Thanks for the help.

  25. i hate to say it but you cut it to small and to will take a lot of releaf cuts to pull that up

  26. Dont say that! I havent final trimmed yet
There is still 2" of extra metal on the back window section.

  27. it just looked like be for you had a lot more on the roof side of the rear window

  28. Ah, well I did trim it down a bit.

    I'm still "exploring" options.
If I slide it forward the low spot shrinks, but not that much.
Here is 3" forward from the last pic, and the low spot is 3/16"
Still more procrastinating to do LOL

  29. I think I've got it figured out.
I wound up skootching is forward just a bit more so the roof slopes lined up better.

Got a little more trimming to do and start exploring the area just ahead of the trunk before I trally throw some wire at it.
