Any Thoughts as to Why Two Door Station Wagons Were Manufactored?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Oldmics, Jun 11, 2009.

  1. I've owned six 2 door wagons plus a couple 4 doors and a couple sedan deliveries. but anyone can build a 2 door hardtop wagon. I wish someone would step up and finish the one I started. I have to many projects ahead of it.

Yeah, these are worthless and I just added anothr 2-dr 56 Plymouth to my sick world. This one is a Plaza which is the economy model, less trim on it and basic interior. Not sure what to do with it for sure, it has the 277 ci motor that I will rob the top off it for a rebuilt 277 shortblock I purchased earlier. May put my old faithful 259 in it and use it as a daily driver. Sure would make a great racer, but I am so poor these days I can hardly pay attention, let alone build a race car. But I am pleased to score it. ~Sololobo~

"Back in the day" More people drove station wagons than pick-ups. Pick-ups were mainly farmer, rancher, contractor. As has been said by many in the past,"back in the day", no self respecting young guy would drive a 4 dr. That was an old mans car. A station wagon would have been even worse unless of course it was a Tri-5 Nomad or Safari

Agree. And today many self respecting people would not want a four-door domestic from BITD.

A very few exceptions, such as lincoln suicides and leadsled era Mercs.

  7. And any Stepdown four-door Hudson! THE best-looking four-door ever built, period.

Mother-in-law control. Watching her climb in the back seat is NOT a pretty sight. Well at least mine.

Uh, yeah, it is a seriously goofy statement: from a seriously goofy guy:D I like to do that to my wife too, say something so freakin' outrageous with a straight face and watch her try to figure out if I'm serious or not...:p

Wild-ass question from left field. I recall at least a few guys filling the back doors. 'course, you'd have to deal with the looks of pillars -- mostly just LIVE with 'em. I imagine that trend didn't get very popular. I don't thnk I saw any reference to it in this thread,

    ANYBODY SEEN THIS DONE WELL?

I think the base 2 door wagon was the Yeoman, really a work vehicle.

They were built simply because the manufacturers could do it.
Yea, that sounds wierd, but consider, back in the day, the only thing that was really different was the roof... It was no more work on the assembly line to put a wagon roof on a 2 door body than a 4 door... Same frame, 1/4 pannels, etc, etc... So the 2 door wagon was offered simply to expand the product line while using existing tooling.

Yes, they are cool as hell!

Of course, I mean filling the back doors on a 4-door wagon. Brain droped a cylinder.

I hate when they fill in the back doors!!
looks like a puttied up 4door. That black 4 door wagon with the suicide rears is a good looking 4 door because the doors are the right size. a lot of 4 doors are 2 door body designs with 4 compromised scrunchy little doors (fine for the wee folk) replacing the 2 full compliment doors
Put 4 well designed full compliment doors on a car and 4 doors look good too.
I'm going to stick with "it ain't the number of doors but what kind of doors" theory. Building a full compliment 2 door is more practical than coming up with an entire new model to fit 4 full doors just for folks over 5'-11" that don't want to feel like they're climbing in and out of a clown car.

Torchman, THAT's all I was looking for: An honest opinion. So, it sounds like (for MOST wagons) filling the back doors would NOT result in a good start toward a surbboard-toting ride! LOL

NOOOOOOO! it would be like "look at that f'ed up 4 door:) Now take a set of 2dr doors and work them in you got a winner.. or suicide the 4 doors in the rear to open like missle silo doors with the fronts :)

  26. 20 years ago when I did up my 56 chevy 4 door wagon, the first thing I did was shave the REAR door handles. This cleaned the car up greatly, and the doors still open from the inside. Best mod I ever made on the car. Actually it fooled many a person, although that was not my intention. just trying to clean it up a little.

We had a 1958 2dr Plymouth wagon. My folks got a 2dr so that us kids could open a door and fall out. Remember this was before seat belts! They were mad when the 2dr. wagon was droped and we got our '62 wagon. Wish I could find a nice(aka rust free) 1958 2dr wagon to build.

    - Yeah,
it's a little known fact, and up until just recently,
a closely-guarded industry "dirty little secret",
that for a time during the mid and late 1950's
and extending into the early 1960's even, there
was an industry-wide shortage of new car doors.
In order to conserve and extend the dwindling
supply of new car doors that the factories had on
hand and desperately needed to meet the needs
of all the four-door sedans and wagons they were
building, the two-door wagon was introduced as
an emergency stop-gap measure to provide
    customers with a '2-less door-consuming'
alternative to the regular wagons!!:D

PS. - IF you buy the above explanation, I've
also got some absolutely primo, ocean front
resort property in central New Mexico for you
and some shares in a nearby Unobtanium
mine to sell you too!! :D
