1930 Model A project begins 8-29-09

Teach builds some nice bikes with a vintage feel, this should turn out to be a great thread.

Great start! Ditch the rack and pinion.......just asking for trouble with that.
Keep up the tuition for the boy......nothing quite like infecting the next generation!

 

it's kool no matter what steering box u use, it's also really cool that the kid is helping @ our house only 2 of them are really into it.keep us updated

What a great project you picked up!
Really cool.

My thoughts on it all since everyone is posting them...

Weld up the holes in the inner frame and its like anything else boxed with flat sheet...leave them and it has an interesting story to tell.
NO WAY I'd weld them up!!!
The 4 link would be gone for a set of traditional-ish hairpins so I could still save a few bucks by reusing the batwings...and the engine mounts would go by the wayside too, for a HURST style front mount.

The rack...well...that CAN work if its mounted strong, a proper greaseable slip joint is used and the resulting steering radius is tight enough. Some big rig 18 wheelers use the same system, just on a larger scale of course.

BUT a regular traditional steering box has a WAY nicer look (and it doesn't grate as many nerves!)

Welcome to the other side Kevin! Looks like a great start to a hot rod, I just bought a Model A project too. How far did you have to travel to get it? Let me know, I'd be happy to help out if you have any questions, don't always have many answers, but know a few who do.

hey teach...you got a good starter. most of these guys started with much less. if u could have seen my sons 27 t or dreddybears 29 a . talk about scrap piles. HA!!! YEA U GOT A CREAMPUFF. call me pop.

 

Been scrounging for parts for this and scored some wheel freebies from a friend.

 

Still needs a lot of work but slowly she will take shape..looking for 32 frame or I may modify this one or even build a new one..not sure yet.

 

Lots of 70s ugliness on that frame. With your skill Kev you can build your own 32 style frame.

Look at Sams thread. $60 in tubing and go for it.
