Got a Hemi today...What the Hell is it?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Richard D, Aug 29, 2009.

  1. Industrial model 24A, Type 929. Can I use pass. car 4bbl intake? Chain or gears for timing? I am in the process of oiling this thing down so I can try to turn it over.

    That's correct. IND 20,20a,24,24a were all 331's.

You have a wet intake,,, meaning there are no water inlets on the front rear of the heads
    no biggie
new cam,and pistons....and a pass. 4 barrel intake will work.
Looking at the pics.....your gonna need pass. pulleys too......

  6. Cool, so it is worth fuckin with.

'54 331... the only short bell 331 with a wet intake. Great engine...what heads do you have? check the casting numbers...

All the passenger car stuff will fit. Show us a pic of the front cover.

IMHO you shouldn't make a habit of suspending that engine with those Mickey Mouse tie downs... you're asking for trouble.

Looks like it has the adjustable rockers on it as well. Do the valve covers have reverse dimples on them??? Or have "Industrial" printed really large across the valve covers???

  9. I don't get the valve covers. Are they really the adj. rockers? I may be able to swing the covers if so.

Perhaps because it is getting late, or perhaps I'm going blind...No adjustable rockers in the pics I see...And the industrial valve cover will say...ChryslerIndustrial...Check Scooters valve cover thread for some pics.

Yes, it is a good engine. Yes, you have the good water pump and housing.
Start reading through the Hemi Tech section. Now.

  11. I didn't think they were the adj. I have been checkin' ScootMc's threads. I am just happy to be in the Hemi clan. It will be some time before this thing is rebuilt. Gotta ride out the recession.

Beer makes you witty doesn't it?;)

  20. I have a chain for hoisting I will be using. I rolled the engine over 45 degrees so I could soak the bores, on the side with the removed head, with air tool oil and acetone. Keeping my fingers crossed on turning it over in a few days. Casting numbers are 1486833-1.

I think I have the twin to that engine. Looks like the same PTO on the back too.

    Although mine is a 56A

    LOL... it was on sale.

  24. I wear it to restaurants; people pay me to leave so they don't have to see that while they are eating.

  25. I think the PTO was for a pump. My roomate says the PTO is worth $500-$600, but I doubt it.

For what? to re-use as a PTO or sell for scrap.. I weighed my engine with the PTO set-up and it came in at 900+ pounds....

  27. He has a friend in the oil fields and says the PTOs are valuable; I still doubt it.

Looks like adjustable pushrods to me. Hard to tell but there is one poking out in one photo with a hex head on it right under the rocker??

  29. I'll have to look tomorrow.

  30. Better to check around than to throw money away, I'd say.
