Hi, have a 235 Chevy 6inline engine in my 50s Chevy Coupe... But i need more information about the engine... Here the number 0386362 F54X Must be an engine from 1954... Could anyone give me more information? THANKS!!!
F54X,F for Flint Michigan,54 for 1954 as you said. And my info has no listing for an X in 1954.But an X in 56 was for 235 engines in light duty trucks.Supposedly truck engines have an aluminum cam gear instead of the fiber one found on car engines. And a truck engine should have solid lifters like some or all manual tranny car engines. There are exceptions to this stuff and over the years things do get changed.
Check the engine and head casting number and we can give you more information. If I understand the F54X right, the engine is a 235 with casting no 3701481? If so its out of a 54' car with manual trans. Cylinder head no 3835913? I hope this information helps you identify you engine.

One more thing..... I recommend you get a manual, they are pretty cheap on ebay. There is an online resource of chevy manuals here, but its no substitute for the real thing. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/index.htm Heres the manual to match a 54 engine..... 1949-1954 Passanger Car Shop Manual
Yes, the number on the head i found is: 3835913 So it is an 235, from 1954, truck engine, right? THANKS!
