F54X,F for Flint Michigan,54 for 1954 as you said. And my info has no listing for an X in 1954.But an X in 56 was for 235 engines in light duty trucks.Supposedly truck engines have an aluminum cam gear instead of the fiber one found on car engines. And a truck engine should have solid lifters like some or all manual tranny car engines. There are exceptions to this stuff and over the years things do get changed.

Check the engine and head casting number and we can give you more information.

If I understand the F54X right, the engine is a 235 with casting no 3701481? If so its out of a 54' car with manual trans.

    Cylinder head no 3835913?

I hope this information helps you identify you engine.

    Per Hollander, F54X is a 1954 235 from a 1/2 ton truck with a standard clutch.
